Jahri Evans

Stick a fork in him, he's done. I thought the hand injury last season was a good reason for his regression but now he's still doing a very poor job. By all accounts he's been a turnstile everyday in training camp. What the heck do we do? Drew's gonna be murdered in the third preseason game when Jahri is lined up across from JJ Watt.

Re: Jahri Evans

Unfortunately, you may be right. He had tons of penalties last year as well. That's what 10 years in the trenches will do to you.

Re: Jahri Evans

He does look bad. If he's done ( which I think he probably is)who replaces him? We didn't draft a G.

Re: Jahri Evans

I thought he would have at least another year of solid play, but at 31, he's in the decline phase. If the NFL has taught us anything, it's that every player ages differently. Some will play well into mid thirties, but most begin a decline around age 30. For some it is gradual but others it's a steep drop. Regretfully, that appears to be the case for Jahri. We probably shouldn't be surprised. He plays a position that takes a beating and the Saints have run a lot of offensive plays in his tenure here. He makes too much to cut, but it is time to begin replacing the aging members of the line.

Re: Jahri Evans

If he's failing and makes too much, he must retire.

Re: Jahri Evans

But what does the team do about it? If it's this obvious that Jahri is a human turnstile other teams are gonna hammer the right side of our offensive line and it's gonna be a disaster. I mean, at what point do you put aside past accomplishments and ask a guy to step down??

Unfortunately, retiring his his decision and he may be too proud to walk away from that cash.

The Saints have two choices within their control. Bench him or cut him.

If we cut him, we would save only 690k on the cap and carry dead money next year.

2 million of his next year's salary is guaranteed and he still has 4.8 million prorated cap charge on his signing bonus due to restructures.

He could be benched assuming there is someone on the roster better. That puts the cap charge on the bench.

I doubt he retires before this season and it is doubtful he retires before next without a catastrophic injury, but in that case, he still gets the guaranteed money and the Saints still take a cap hit. And even if he retires, the cap charge from the signing bonus already paid is still counted toward the cap throughout the duration of the contract.

Of course he won't walk away from the money. So as pseudo-head coaches (which let's face it that's what we all are) how do we approach this situation? Senio Kelemete isn't perfect but he's the only in-house replacement we have. Any teams out there really hurting for a right guard that we can hoodwink and trade Jahri to??
