The New Orleans Saints have been getting creative with some of their special teams work in training camp.

The Saints have used props at times to teach their return men. On one day, they used a volleyball instead of a football to simulate certain situations. On Sunday, the returners donned boxing gloves.

The reason behind it, said Saints coach Sean Payton, was to teach them the proper fundamentals of returning a ball without the benefit of using their hands in the usual way.

The fact that returners, receivers, football players and athletes in general don't have a natural ability to catch and even throw a ball, is amazing to me. What is one of the first thing someone does and/or learns to do? Play catch.

They had them last year too. I'd never seen them until last years camp. I think Chevron sponsors the Saints' spring training at Greenbrier. I guess if you'd call the resort they stay in "training camp". It turns our team into a bunch of sissy's.

Good. Proper form when catching the ball on returns is so darn important. A muffed ball on a punt makes an easy turnover for the other team.
