The New Orleans Saints claimed linebacker Michael Mauti on waivers from the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, according to NFL wire.

The team also added defensive end Obum Gwacham on waivers from the Seattle Seahawks.

The Saints will need to remove two players from their current 53-man roster to add the new players.

Of the players waived by the Saints on Saturday, quarterback Ryan Griffin was claimed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and offensive tackle Bryce Harris by the Atlanta Falcons. Cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste, a second-round pick in 2014, went unclaimed and is now a free agent.

Mauti is from Mandeville and played football at Penn State. His father Rich played for the Saints from 1977-1983.

The Vikings drafted Mauti in the seventh round (213th overall). In two years with the Vikings, he played in 15 games and made 16 tackles.
Gwacham was a sixth-round draft pick of the Seattle Seahawks in May out of Oregon State.

Convert Obum to TE since he really was a receiver first?

Gwacham is intriguing. I heard we were looking for edge rushers so hopefully we have a diamond in the rough here. Probably not, but wouldn't that be nice?!

To bring a project to the active roster is a head scratcher. The bottom of the roster aren't active on gameday anyway. Hate that NFL rule by the way.

Obum Gwacham - DE
Born: March 20, 1991 (age 24), Onitsha, Nigeria (It is said "the dude talks funny") ;)
Height: 6' 5" Weight: 248 lbs

Gwacham is a raw, developmental athlete who was drafted by the Seahawks in the sixth round out of Oregon State this year. The 6-5, 249-pounder spent his first three seasons as a wide receiver and also was a high jumper on the track team. He converted to defense in his final college season and had four sacks.

STRENGTHS
Transitioned from wide receiver to defensive end in 2014. Elite explosion traits. Reached 7-foot-1 as a high-jumper and was also a triple-jumper for Oregon State track team. Can unlock hips for sudden change of direction in open field. Locks quarterback in his sights once he shakes free as pass rusher. Has length and foot explosiveness defensive coordinators salivate over. Proved to be effective dropping into space on zone blitzes. Exceptional personal and football character with a desire to learn his new position. Is relentless and dogged in pursuit of the play and will come from across the field to capture a loose running back. Has immediate value on kickoff coverage.

WEAKNESSES
Play strength is below the necessary levels to play every down. Must continue body transformation for new position. Despite early jump into gap or upfield, is easily redirected out of the play by most tackles who get their hands on him. Needs more upper-body strength and better footwork to become an adequate edge-setter. Basic pass rusher relying on edge burst that is set up by inside head fake. Doesn't have true go-to pass-rush move. Lacking a counter move when initial rush stalls out. Fights hard but lacks ability to hold up at point of attack against base blocks.

Re: Saints claim Michael Mauti, Obum Gwacham on waivers

Dear New Orleans Saints fans;

Enjoy Michael Mauti. He may not be the most talented player in the world but he will give 100% effort all the time.

And I mean ALL the time.

Michael Mauti is a guy who wants it as bad as you can want it. He’s suffered some injuries and other setbacks in his career but he’s never let that deter him.

This guy will be a top special teams player for you and soon he will become a fan favorite.

If he sticks with the team.

That’s the thing about Mauti: Desire is a great thing to have, but talent matters too.

Mauti has some talent but not a lot. There is no guarantee that he will even stick with the Saints.

But if the Saints do keep him around, they’ll get a leader and a man the fans will enjoy. They’ll get a man who is not afraid to light a fool up.

And he’s a heady player and a tough competitor.

Michael Mauti is going to be a hell of a coach one day if that’s the way he decides to go.
