New Orleans Saints waiving rookie defensive lineman Ashaad Mabry

The New Orleans Saints are waiving rookie defensive tackle Ashaad Mabry, just one day after he celebrated making the team's original 53-man roster, a source told NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune.

The news was first reported by ESPN's Field Yates.

Mabry was one of two players cut on Sunday. The Saints needed roster space after being awarded two players they claimed on waivers.

The Saints also released veteran safety Kenny Phillips.

Mabry could still end up on the Saints practice squad after clearing waivers.
The Saints had four undrafted free agent defensive linemen on Saturday's roster, making Mabry vulnerable. Rookies Tavaris Barnes, Bobby Richardson and Kaleb Eulls are still on the 53-man unit.

Mabry, 22, signed with the Saints in May out of UT-San Antonio. He started his college career at Oklahoma State before leaving to be with his mother while she battled a serious

Mabry rated out very well against the run according to PFF... he shouldn't clear waivers but if he does I hope he goes to the PS.

Side note, although I like Kenny it's a good sign that he was let go. I actually think Byrd might play week 1 now.

Byrd better play his @ss off...

Don't like releasing Phillips at all; nor Pierre Warren...

Mabry was better at disengaging blocks and shutting down the interior gaps than Jenkins...

Claiming Michael Mauti sounds like a ***-D*amn Brother-In-Law/ Nepotism move like having the linebackers coach's son scout for us...

- this move really pi$$ed me off...

And then we cut one project in Stanley Jean Baptiste to pick up another in Obum Gwacham, a former wide receiver turned defensive end?!? WTF?!?

We just released two, very solid players for a brother-in-law deal and another project who's taking up an active roster spot instead of a practice squad role...

We should have been trading a late conditional pick to steal Terrence West from the Browns like the Titans did than releasing two good players for a Rich Mauti's boy and another project...

or perhaps send Ryan Griffin to Cleveland instead of letting him go to Tampa; executive of the year, my arse...

I can understand this...

Loomis has lost his appeal to me after the last few years. Some really poor decisions on personnel and FA signings to go together with some very bad contract decisions has backed us into a cap corner for a few years. If Byrd doesn't pan out this year it may be time to cut ties with Loomis as that deal might be the nail in the coffin.

No part of me is comprehending some of the moves we're making. Warren and Phillips were the best backup safeties we had, and I could understand releasing them if they thought they had better options on the waiver wire, but they didn't replace them at all.

Mabry has shown some potential and definitely has the size, yet we release him and pick up these two no names? Along with all the terrible drafting the past several years and the huge contracts... At least I'm not in the minority anymore among people who are getting tired of these personnel gaffs.

I'm hoping for big things from this team, but they aren't making a lot of sense with whatever they're trying to do.

I think this was intentionally done to help sneak Mabry through waivers.

There's a better chance of him clearing a 2nd wave of waivers since many teams addressed their need on that 1st wave of cuts.

It may not work, but it just might. If we get him on the PS we can keep him.

Philips will likely be back after week 1 when his salary isn't fully guaranteed. He'll be a week to week cap hit.

But why try to sneak him through waivers when you can simply keep him like they had in the first place? They didn't replace him with a better player on the roster, so why risk putting him through waivers to have him on the PS?

If it's about the 53 best players then these nobody's we picked up should not take his place. I don't want to over analyze a back of the roster player, but this kind of thing happens every year, and I'm left scratching my head.

My problem with the Mabry move is that he was the only true NT other than Jenkins on the roster...

And he actually could be a starter with a year or two of experience...

I get Danno's point of week-to-week salary cap hits rather than guaranteeing the contract, but if he's with us all season, what's the point - cap flexibility?!?

The Byrd contract is an Albatross and it should be hung on Loomis' proverbial neck - if it weren't for Payton, he'd gone the way of Kuharich years ago...

Does Loomis make these decisions? Who does? Is it SP? I don't think blaming any one person is right... But blaming several of them, well that seems fair.
