He also preferred the number over the No. 45 he wore through the offseason and preseason as a tribute to the No. 8 he wore in college at Washington, as in four plus four equals eight.

"One of my friends pointed it out," Kikaha said.

But those weren't the only reasons for the number change.

The clincher came with something his grandmother told him.

"I'm the 44th descendent of my great-grandmother, who's like our favorite person in our family," Kikaha said. "She's going to be 100 in two years."
