Benson can't be that poor...

remember-

saints ranking-
current value 26th 627mil
revenue 20th 157mil (more than jets, giants, 49ers...)
two most interesting...
operating expenses 28th only 8mil
debt- LAST, zero, the only team with no debt. only 4 under 10mil and 9 over 25mil with the pats at 54mil.

i think the debt is because the newer trends for aggressive owners is to want ownership of the stadium. though it is a debt you turn into pure profit/all yours

peruse...

SCSaint -- thanks for the info. It seems it is true.

LKelley67 -- Those are some very interesting facts. I had no idea.

I\'d love for Benson to open up his books on the Saints.

... I may be wrong, but I believe the salary cap is tied up to the TV contract...

Benson can't be that poor...

just from an editorial but it reminded me of the story someone topld here of meeting friendly benson in lafayette when he just bought the team-

I was in a meeting with Benson, another Saints official, State-Times sports editor Dan Hardesty, Mike Cook and State-Times-Morning Advocate executive editor Jim Hughes in Hughes\' office at the Advocate building the summer after Benson purchased the Saints.

He was promoting the Saints as \"Louisiana\'s team.\" He said he wanted families to come from all over the state to enjoy the team. He said it would be their team.

No wonder he called it \"Louisiana\'s Team.\" We bought it for him. And, that\'s not all. The state, despite being squeezed to fund many essential services, is being bled for more ransom money just to keep Benson among the NFL\'s top money-making owners.

The salary cap is based on the amount each team gets from the TV deals, in my understanding. Those numbers listed in the initial post will probably be equal to the 2006 cap number for each team. The teams split the total tv contract for each year evenly between them. As I\'ve said before, evey bit of the salary cap that Benson does not use goes in his pockets.

Also, you\'ve really got to watch the language Benson is using. He says he\'s not able to compete without the help from the state. First, he\'s not talking about his overall wealth. That\'s irrelevant. Second, when he says compete, he\'s not talking about on the field. He is talking about the amount of profits generated by ticket sales, cencessions, sales of merchandise, etc.

Basically, he is not making as much as other owners so he is losing in comparison. He allows this to negatively affect the team because he doesn\'t spend money on FAs and keeps the extra cap money (given to him by the NFL from the tv contracts) for himself. Then we lose or break even and ticket sales and other sales drop and he complains more about not being able to compete.

If this doesn\'t make your blood boil, you\'re either not a Saints fan or you\'re dead.

If it\'s not directly tied to the salary cap, the agents know about the contracts, so it might as well be.
