It Was Jabari Greer All Along: On the Piece that Tied the Saints Together and the Future of Sean Payton

Sean Payton’s career regular season record1 is 39-8 (.830) in games with Jabari Greer and 42-43 (.494) in games without Jabari Greer.

In 2009, Jabari Greer was injured during the second half of the regular season. In the eight games he played, the Saints allowed their opponents to complete just 51.9 percent of their passes for 1759 yards (220 per game) with six touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Passer rating allowed: extraordinary 54.2. The Saints went 8-0.

In the seven meaningful games the 2009 Saints played without Greer, they allowed their opponents to complete 63.8 percent of their passes for 1864 yards (266 per game) with eight touchdowns and ten interceptions. Passer rating allowed: 79.9 — still okay, but 54.2 would have led the league, and 79.9 would have finished twelfth. They went 5-2.

In 2009, Jabari Greer returned just in time for the playoffs. The Saints went 3-0.

The Greer effect in 2013 is famous. Greer played the first ten games of that season. The Saints went 8-2. They allowed opponents to complete just 56.6 percent of their passes for 1914 yards (just 191.4 per game) with 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Passer rating allowed: 72.6.

Without Greer, the Saints went 3-3, allowed opponents to complete 65.8 percent of their passes for 1191 yards, with nine touchdowns and just two interceptions. Passer rating allowed: 95. Overall, the Saints are 11-16 since a knee injury ended Greer’s career.

It would have been incredible if we could have had Keenan Lewis and Jabari Greer both in their prime. Greer was amazing in 2009 and 2011.

I think most teams would have similar results if they lost their #1 CB and their #2 wasn't all that great to begin with.

So Lewis isn't all that great?

Greer and Lewis played together in 10 games in 2013.

Yup. Greer was way under-estimated during his time here. I remember a stat from 2009, where someone pointed out that anytime when Greer and Porter were BOTH on the field, together, they had better numbers and performance than Revis. Who at that time was considered the elite name. And also let's not forget in the Super Bowl, Greer gets dinged up, he goes out for one play, Usama Young comes in for one play -- boom, TOUCHDOWN, Peyton Manning!

I never underestimated him since he was just about the best DB I have ever seen in the Black and Gold. :bandg:

He was a great DB that's for sure. I think there must be a ton of other factors that are coincidental to this but there is no denying solid corner play will help with wins.
