The New Orleans Saints officially released DE Anthony Spencer from the injured reserve list on Tuesday, according to the NFL transactions release.

Spencer, 31, sustained a torn ACL in 2013 during the first game of the season. At the time, he was playing under the Cowboys’ franchise tag, which resulted in him accepting a one-year, prove-it contract with Dallas.

It took him a while to find a team during free agency, but the Saints eventually signed him to a one-year contract in April. However, Spencer was placed on season-ending injured reserve before the start of the season.

In 2014, Spencer appeared in 13 games and recorded 23 tackles, a half sack, a forced fumble, a recovery for a touchdown and a pass defense. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the N0. 21 defensive end in a 4-3 defense out of 59 qualifying players.

When you approach your pass rush with band-aid solutions, should you expect anything else other than band-aids?

At the least, he served his purpose in somewhat masking our priorities in the 2015 draft - though our pass rush needs were the worst kept secret these past seasons...

Thank you for your service as a Saint, sir...

I believe he is still on the roster, just released from IR.

I think Byrd got the reserve-return tag.

So if he's taken off injured reserve, and he's out for the season, where do we put him? I dont see why we'd put him on the active roster or practice squad. I think he's been totally released.

You can't just auto-in from Injured reserve.
He is released as in gone.
I guess his rehab was NOT going according to schedule.
Probably would not be ready to go when return date came up.
Spencer would have helped had he been healthy.
Hope all goes well for him going forward.

If you're released from IR you become a free-agent. He can now negotiate with any team, including us.

Of course the whole new CBA stuff may have changed that. I can't keep up with the new rules anymore.

NFL.com shows his status as "cut". He never played a down for the Saints.

Re: Saints Release Veteran DE Anthony Spencer From I.R.

my guess is that we reached an injury settlement and cut him

Byrd was on PUP , not IR

I believe we can still activate someone after week 6 (now) and have them play week 8.
