Brees, who turns 37 in January, is in the second-to-last year of a five-year deal worth $100 million. He's making $13.5 million this year, but the Jets would only have to come up with half in the event of a deadline trade. The base salary is a staggering $19.75 million next year and the salary cap hit is $30 million -- the highest in the league. By releasing or trading Brees, the Saints would save $20 million. Thinking ahead, the Saints picked quarterback Garrett Grayson in the third round this year, the highest they've drafted a quarterback in the regular draft since Archie Manning in 1971.

ESPN deals more with politics and peaking into athletes lives now than actual sports. It is the sports equivalent of a tabloid magazine.

Trade I would like to see: A half arse decent sports network that can get stories right more than 20% of the time, is not full of pompous jerks who think we're tuning in to hear them talk about their little clique, and give more than mere seconds of coverage to most of the teams not in the large markets for ESPN...

At best, Grayson will be the backup of the future. Brees' replacement probably isn't even starting in college yet.

I don't know if anyone wasted the time on reading it, but the other trades were laughable as well. JJ Watt to Packers. Megatron to Patriots. It's like these writers are 11 year old boys playing with action figures. Or pimply geeks in their moms' basement with Madden Playstation, a case of chocolate Yoohoo, and too much time on their hands.

A third round pick? He must not know bout us. We just get a second round pick taken away and then we draft someone in the second round just to cut them. We don't value no damn pick. especially for the best player in Saints history. He needs to go roll his ass off a damn cliff somewhere.

Yes makes sense. Give up a hall of fame QB who could still play solid at 40 that is 37 when QB is the hardest position to fill. That worked out great for the Colts.

actually the jets are the only team in the NFL that are a QB away from making a run at a title IMO. They dumped a ton of cash into all of the rest of the positions in the off season so the appear ready but lack that one main ingredient. Drew

So from that view point i can see were they are coming from.

Trade Drew then you might as well go for broke and deal away SP at the same time. load up on picks and pray for the best. Superbowl run? we are talking multi picks in the first three rounds for two to three years.

Will it happen? never know, no matter how fetched it would seem.

IDK, it looks like they just grabbed a couple guys with big contract years coming up and assumed they should be traded, ie Drew, Calvin ... #shrug.

For 2 #1 picks and able to drop a 27 million contract I would do it. I think Grayson looks great from what little I have seen but in case he's not the answer I would trade for Carr in Oakland, draft a big body WR , T, and G and go with that, everything else on the O is good.

I'm thinking ESPN is bordering on becoming the MSNBC and CNBC of sports programming.

Its sad to see a once great sports channel turn into the embarrassment that it currently is.

Their downfall started after being purchased by ABC.

3rd rd pick for a top 5 QB........even ESPN should have been to smart to post this. Brees will fix this contact and extend a year. 2 more years of Brees should give GG enough time to learn SP playbook.

I disagree. The extension will be no fewer than two years and I'll bet Grayson never starts a game for the Saints unless Brees is sat due to injury.
