When New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton watched the Washington Redskins steamroll his team 47-14 two weeks ago, he'd had enough.

The Saints failed to stop even rudimentary screen passes. Defenders missed routine tackles. Players looked alternately lost and disinterested. New Orleans made the league's 28th-ranked offense look unstoppable.

Payton knew that day that something had to give.
