Titans cut four starters including Carter, Rolle, Mason

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The Tennessee Titans are finally taking a break in their spending spree to win a Super Bowl title.

Receiver Derrick Mason and cornerback Samari Rolle were released Monday in an effort to trim up to $27 million to get under the NFL salary cap. The Titans also released starting defensive lineman Kevin Carter and right tackle Fred Miller, fullback Robert Holcombe and kicker Joe Nedney.

The Titans are the NFL's fourth-winningest team since 1999 at 61-35, and reached the playoffs four of the past six seasons.

Tennessee came up short of forcing overtime in the 2000 Super Bowl against the St. Louis Rams, played in two AFC Championships and lost twice to the eventual Super Bowl champions in other years (Baltimore in 2001, New England in 2004).

Titans owner Bud Adams said everyone on the team knew this day was going to come.
