If Dennis Allen is so entrenched, limited in a 4-3 not to get all his best players on the field...

...then shame on Payton for not getting the right defensive coordinator to make it work...

Is it any surprise? Hasn't Payton's MO for years now to get the right players for one scheme and then change it completely? Now we're one or two pieces away from running a great 3-4... Perfect timing for changing it up and forcing square pegs into round holes.

It is maddening; we've really got a good solid core for the front seven...

One thing I really like about the 3-4 scheme is that you don't have to rely on big, athletic defensive linemen with shelf lives of 3-4 years which are the rare breed of the specialties; you can get linebackers in the 6'2" to 6'4" range and with the depth you'll also have great special teams that can run as well...

Good Point. Hopefully, Dan Roushar will whip the offensive line unit into shape...

Buccaneers hire Brett Maxie as defensive backs coach | ProFootballTalk

Wished we could have had both Maxie working with the Safeties and Glenn with the corners...

Sean Payton Gives Details On the Saints Reconfigured Coaching Staff | The New Orleans Advocate — New Orleans, Louisiana

MOBILE, Ala. — Sean Payton confirmed the changes he has made on his coaching staff since the end of the regular season, which were already known. But he [B]did end the mystery surrounding one situation.

When the Saints hired Dan Campbell to serve as the tight ends coach, it was widely reported he would also serve as the assistant head coach. This raised questions about Joe Vitt’s role with the team since he was previously given the title of assistant head coach.

It turns out nothing will change at all. Payton said Tuesday that Vitt and Campbell will both be assistant head coaches. Vitt will be tasked with focusing on the defense, while Campbell will focus on the offense.

“We typically sit in a room for a long time and go through the run and the pass,” Payton said of Campbell’s role. “Sometimes it’s not always efficient, it’s long and it’s tedious. That helps me.”

The addition of Campbell is one of several moves the Saints have made this offseason. Joe Lombardi, a former New Orleans assistant and Detroit Lions offensive coordinator, is returning to coach the quarterbacks. He replaces Mike Neu, who left to become the head coach at Ball State.

Dan Roushar, who coached the tight ends, will move over to coach the offensive line after Bret Ingalls was fired. Offensive assistant Kyle DeVan, who assisted on the offensive line and left to join Neu’s staff, will be replaced by Brendan Nugent.

New Orleans still needs to replace offensive assistant Greg Lewis, who assisted with the wide receivers and left to take a job in Philadelphia. Payton said the team will interview some people this week.

On defense, the Saints have added secondary coach Aaron Glenn and senior defensive assistant Peter Giunta. New Orleans lost its secondary coach, Wesley McGriff, to Auburn.

It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...

Errr what? That is exactly the biggest issue with 3-4 defenses that you need big athletic defensive linemen that are actually rarer to find than a decent LT. Really good NTs for example are very far and few in-between.

It's been really disappointing to see how Sean has run this under performing defense over the last decade .

Agreed. Its one of the benefits of the 4-3. There are a lot more 4-3 DE/DT types than 3-4 types.

Its also why Wade Phillips employed his one gap 3-4, which is similar to a 4-3 under. It doesn't require that huge DT over the center.

But the 2-gap 3-4 front is more difficult to play in today’s N.F.L. Those planet-like defensive linemen are getting harder and harder to find. Players generated by today’s college defenses are built for speed. Not many defensive line prospects can hold the point of attack against a monstrous OT and control two gaps. Not many 245-250-pound linebackers are agile enough to elude a guard on every play and still run down a ballcarrier with 4.45 speed. With the number of coordinators running the 3-4 now, those players are even hotter commodities than before.

As a result, a majority of the 3-4 fronts today are based on the 1-gap schemes designed by Bum Phillips or those that use other wrinkles to bring pressure and disguise coverage. Other than Parcells’ Dallas and Miami teams in recent seasons, every other contemporary 3-4 defense mixes in 1-gap techniques liberally, some exclusively. The true 3-4 front has become a dinosaur of sorts as an every-down defense.
