Saints 2016 Coaching Staff

Well, Payton is coming back...

Wesley McGriff has moved on...

Was just wondering, Adam Gase was hired by the Dolphins to be their next head coach...

Could Gase's father-in-law, Joe Vitt Sr, join him in Miami to help him build his staff?!?

I've made my feelings known about Vitt, but...

Payton just got a tremendous vote of confidence and as long as he's been here...

Was just wondering what changes you guys see taking place?!?

If Vitt goes I hope he takes Bill Johnson and Greg McMahon with him...

I know we are all pretty dissatisfied with Witt, Johnson etc. But One thing I have noticed is that hardly no players leaving (except for Galette) are saying anything about the coaching staff being bad. Or I might have missed it?

A lot of times you can see players atleast hinting about coaches not being good when they leave a team.

But we are not winning; and our special teams and D-Line are a joke...

With DA being the DC it will be interesting to see how this shakes out.

Young guys. They don't know any better. And if they do, then they probably know better than to say anything.

Is it official then? Allen has been named the DC?

He was the interim DC; after Ryan being shown the door. No one has heard different, so he's still the DC until told otherwise

Could be waiting until after the post season to see who's out there. Marvin Lewis anyone?

I'm hoping for several new faces on the coaching staff.

With the exception of the SuperBowl year, and even then, the defense had been middle-of-the-road at best...

And among the constants in that time since 2009 - LBer Coach Joe Vitt, DL Coach Bill Johnson...

It's really time to get some fresh air on the defensive side of the ball...

And on offense, if we could trade either/both Spiller, Byrd for offensive line, running game coach Aaron Kromer, I do that as well...

K Major 01-10-2016 03:12 PM

Re: Saints 2016 Coaching Staff

I heard Payton say CJ wasn't healthy. When Spiller was on the field, he wasn't healthy. Pretty much it in a nut shell.

IMO he returns for one more season.

Willis, who enjoyed a seven-year NFL playing career with three teams is a 14-year coaching veteran who joins the Saints after spending the past two seasons as defensive coordinator/inside linebackers coach at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

http://prod.static.saints.clubs.nfl....young_card.jpg

Brian Young enters his first season in charge of the club’s outside linebackers. In his seventh season as a member of the coaching staff, Young helped Assistant Head Coach/Linebackers Joe Vitt tutor the Saints linebackers from 2012-14 after breaking into the ranks as a coaching assistant from 2009-11.

Now about Bill Johnson, you may have a point, but we brought in 2 new LB coaches and Vitt is the "assistant Head Coach" now.

Ok, what has he done good or bad? Was it Vitt? Was it lack of talent? Was it the DCs scheme? How much power did he have?

The truth is that none of us know who's at fault at all.

And still to this day no one can name one single LB that got better after leaving, or a single free agent LB that got worse when they came here.

I actually never heard anyone refer to him as interim. Everything I heard was he took over as DC. I really think he was hired to take over the job from the get go. There were rumblings about Payton and Ryan not seeing eye to eye last season. When Payton announced that Ryan would still be the DC after last year he didnt seem to excited about it.

That's correct, valid points...

...and it also illustrates that how some feel Vitt was a handicap with regards to the linebacking corps as we did see much improved play on the part of both the inside and outside linebackers with Willis and Young taking charge respectively this past season...

...so the change has already been happening as you indicated...

...And we're all in agreement that the defensive line continues to underwhelm...

To be fair; he was good for his rookie preseason; 3 sacks I believe... Injured on September 25th and waived before he ever saw the field again.

It's hard to say if he got better, because he was pretty damn good before he was injured...

Signed again in '08 from the Dolphins because we were looking at him to be a long snapper, released when a better option was found.

And I'd agree with the previous post that having hired Willis (Inside Linebackers) and assigning Brian Young (Outside Linebackers) this past offseason at least shows the organization acknowledges those areas were worefully underperforming...

Fuita's best years were here, in fact I'd say he got better as a Saint. Cassillas was the same player here as he was with the Rams. Shanle was better here than in Dallas

Don't know 'bout that as Fujita and that Browns team had a good couple of years - their offense just sucked unless they played the Saints...

Think you may mean J Dunbar as Casillas plays for the G'nats and is doing really well...

Jonathan Casillas, OLB for the New York Giants at NFL.com

Agree with you on another post that Shanle too waay took much flack, he played all out with his physical talents and mistakes were often because the strong safety (Bama41) was slow to pick up 'exchanges' in coverage...

Rex will teach Rob what defense lol

Rex will keep Rob on a short leash. Rob will have little say in player moves also.

Rob is in the perfect place, under his big brothers thumb.

Just my opinion guys ...

The entire defensive staff needs to be gutted. Look at a younger position coach that comes from a solid, aggressive system (Broncos, Seahags, Jets). No need to call guys who are retreads with complicated schemes.

Specifically on defense, our non blitzing/passive schemes we ran with Spaggs & Rob aren't working. We need to blitz a LOT, even if we get burned a time or two.

I'm all in on the youth movement with players and coaches as well. We need new faces, fresh ideas to compete in 2016.

I agree except I am ok with keeping and giving DA a chance.

Lofton?

Re: Saints 2016 Coaching Staff

I don't have any specific changes to predict but I don't think they will be swift or "instant gratification" type moves made today or tomorrow like some people here seem to want....I think Payton is quietly telling certain people to sharpen up their resumes and look for other employment, so they peel off from the ship gradually, as opposed to BOOM -- dropping the hammer on half the staff, all at once, creating turmoil like some people seem to want. A lot of good assistant coaches and coordinators around the league are still active and playing games yesterday, next weekend, and onwards until middle of February...still plenty of time to watch and get ideas, then make some phone calls in the next month or so...

I actually though he was better for us than what I thought he was with Atlanta.

The good thing is DA does blitz a lot, which he adopted from GW.

DA scheme-wise is very similar to GW. Personality and assertiveness is different as DA seems more technical while GW was more aggressive.

I think DA will perform very well given the chance and given more talent in the front 7.

You could add Dun-bar to the list.

There is no doubt we have not added (through FA or the draft) very much talent to the position in the past, however what value does Vitt add?

Does letting Vitt go (he will be joining his son this year) add value to the team? My opinion is yes, but no one knows for sure until he's gone.

Until last year's draft, we've not added a linebacker of note unless it came through free agency...

Perhaps with Ireland in tow along with new specialized coaches in Willis and Young, we'll see an improvement...

Vitt had been Payton's enforcer on the staff...

Now with Payton clearly in charge of the franchise, that role may be reduced that Vitt can move on and join his son-in-law, Adam Gase, in Miami...

jeanpierre 01-12-2016 06:43 AM

Re: Saints 2016 Coaching Staff

The guy I'd hire to start taking this rebuilding defense in the right direction is Clemson DC Brent Venables...

Bama is so ****ing deep, it was inevitable that they'd find cracks in the Clemson personnel; but Clemson's front seven has been one nasty force since he arrived in 2012...

He's the defensive mind that could match Payton and really get things turned around...

Let Vitt leave, promote Allen to Assistant HC to be Payton's enforcer, coaching instructor and let this guy come in and take hold of the defense - now that'd be exciting...
