New Orleans Saints could clear $7 million in cap space with moves

1 Attachment(s)
The New Orleans Saints could clear $7 million off the books this week after making several cuts.

The Saints released veterans Jahri Evans, David Hawthorne and Ramon Humber on Monday. Cornerback Brandon Browner posted a farewell message last week but has not been formally released.

If Browner is cut this week, the Saints will have saved $7.034 million from the 2016 salary cap, realizing a net gain of $5.234 million. To do so, the Saints had to add to their already alarming amount of "dead money," which refers to the portion of the salary cap allotted to players no longer with the club.

Shane Richardson @ShaneNFL

With G Jahri Evans release, #Saints now have an eye-popping $21.9M in dead money against their 2016 cap (14.6% of their cap space).

That dead money is whatever. We'll be better for it in the long run.

Dead money just speaks to the mistakes made in making certain deals. As far as what it means moving forward, it means nothing. If you have a guy who's hurting the team on the field, you have to let him go. The money is wasted either way, so which would you rather? Release the player, absorb the hit and find a better player, or keep him to save some money of adding another player and continue to watch him cost your team on the field?

The choice is easy to me.

It would be interesting to see how we compare with other clubs' levels of dead money. No matter which way you look at it, it is money that can't be used to attract or retain talent.

He's the reason it looks bad now, but it's going to get a lot worse once they cut Browner, and possibly Spiller. Again though, it doesn't matter now. No sense in looking back if you intend to improve the roster.

Don't panic. It'll be alright.

Next year most will drop off. We can back load Drew and whomever we choose to bring in. I want to say 18 of the 22 million will fall off next year. Gives us a chance to resign Drew, lower his current cap hit and free up 10-15 million more this year. Ellerbe should be cut and there is no dead money from his 5.9million contract. If he chooses to stay his contract will be closer to 2 million freeing up 4 million. will a possible 20 million being freed this year (releasing and fixing contracts) and 18 million next (dead money falling off) we are in a lot better shape than we think. I will not be shocked if we make a push for a couple of top dogs this off-season.
