Twenty years ago, the state needed a savior to prevent one of the least-successful franchises in NFL history from leaving New Orleans.
Enter a car salesman named Tom Benson, who bought the Saints for $75 million, derailing a reputed "done deal" to move the team out of the state.

A gleeful Gov. Edwin Edwards pulled a Saints cap over his silver hair to announce the purchase. Edwards lobbied hard to keep the Saints, arguing that their poor performance on the field didn't minimize their economic impact.
