Solidifying pass protection gives Drew the time he needs to keep our offense clicking.. I t is very difficult to find OL rookies that can start immediately in today's nfl game.
This doesn't mean we shouldn't draft a guard. I think that we will be in the market for a vet at the guard spot. You always overpay in FA. Why not overpay for the best.

We do not need to overpay for a guard...

We did that with the last guard we signed out of Baltimore (Grubbs)...

If he was that good, Ozzie Newsome wouldn't have let him on the open market...

I do agree we need a couple guards in FA. I wouls settle with Leito and 2 mid level guards. Maybe draft Vadal in the 2nd. We can not waste money as we have in the past on big name flops.

Re: Guard FA is critical.

we need to draft a guard. We have to start building through the draft (which we did last year). It is my belief (and I may very well be wrong) that most really good teams build through the draft. I thought Tim improved a lot as the year went on, am I wrong in my thinking? Even drafting a guard would probably mean we would need a vet for 1-2 years. So we will probably still need one through FA. We let JE walk because he wasn't worth (was it 5 or 6 mil??) the money, wouldn't we pay a decent vet the same?

How did Grubbs do for KC last year? I honestly don't know.

Re: Guard FA is critical.

Tim Lelito needs to play RG because he does so much better there. We can find a great player to play LG in the 2nd or even 3rd round of the draft. Any other guards I'd bring in would be cheap backups.

Re: Guard FA is critical.

Litto on the left or the right really makes no difference when he has showed little to absolutely no improvement in his ability to react the phone booth. stunts are still killing the kid. Picking them up, passing them off and picking up delayed blitzes. None of the skill sets are near the level they need to be. I am starting to give up on the kid and accept he is a backup in our system or he needs a change and get in a system that requires him to do less.

There are the only a few players I see in the draft that could be on the board when we pick and have a shot at starting. I have dropped a few off my list.

day 2
Joshua Garnett OT/OG Stanford 6041 321 5.38
Connor McGovern, OG, Missouri 6042 305 5.02
day 3
Joe Dahl OG Washington St. 6041 312 5.29

Free agents?
high priced
Kelechi Osemele, G/OT, Ravens - no doubts about his game

moderate
Jeff Allen, G, Chiefs 0 still trying to figure out why Reed did not play him more

cheap risk?
Mike Harris, G, Vikings

Connor McGovern looked like best prospect at the combine and his game tapes are solid. he may have jumped all the way into the second. experienced at OT and both OG positions is huge. size and reach are basically average but superior strength and probably the smoothest OL in the draft makes up for a good bit of the short comings. He is quickly becoming a top favorite. just wish he had more sand in his pants to compete in our division.

Mike Harris is interesting because he just switched to guard and looked pretty good after looking pretty darn poor at tackle.

Draft has some solid prospect to develop over a year or two but to start? it looks like slim pickings. That is why I do not put a lot weight on the bowl performances of some DL prospects. It is a down year for interior offensive lineman.

I agree we need to draft a guard but expecting a rookie to come in and start is a recipe for disaster . We need a very good veteran if we hope to have success this year.

Young and worth the money, if we don't overpay.

Re: Guard FA is critical.

STOP!!! This theory of having this great offense and no D is flawed if you haven't been paying attention.

SO we can score 50 against any team but when the other teams score 51 we lose.

We have NO D!!! We need to get one if we ever want to win another SB. We need a D that cans keep people from going over 20 - so our offense could get 21 and win.

Sorry I think we need to look D first at every pick if there isn't one we love then go O with that pick.

Yeah that Collins kid has been horrible for the Cowboys and Evans was a hot mess for us in his first year....
