The last two seasons we had a declining Evans, Lelito, Goodwin and Kelemente.

Strief was better than all of them.

Danno, you didn't speak up enough during the season. "Knowledgeable" people need to speak up in bad seasons as much as good.

I'm just saying, all I heard on this forum was Streif needs to go and should be a backup to Peat from a lot of posters. I heard Kelemente was bad a few times that may have hurt Streif's positioning but I don't recall him being defended at all after that situation. I had even thought Peat was playing RT in Streif's place some last year and him holding well.

Re: Zach Strief tells WWL radio, 'I'll be able to start until somebody beats me out'

Well the talk about Streif just basically reinforced that we DO need a receiver. Read what Elijah S Williams posted on SR(this may also be Football CEO? with those video blogs?)

.................................................................................
The RT position for us has always had someone with Length/Big Body. Not the greatest athlete and never asking them to play like an elite pass protecting RT. We need a big guy that is Smart and can protect to the inside and then use their length to push anybody that gets past them off their rush path.

The main reason it appears Peat wasn't a factor last year seems to have had very little to do with ability and everything to do with knowledge. More than once in reference to Peat it was mentioned that the best way to teach a tackle the position is to start him inside at Guard. They learn the protections and what the guys on the inside of them are doing much better which makes it easier to play Tackle in the long run.

Strief on the other Hand got beat for some memorable plays (namely the Brees hit) but wasn't NEARLY as bad as the #'s suggest. Now could he be upgraded (YES) and in due time he will be however his edge over Peat is still in his knowledge of the game.

Now one could argue on the hit that injured Brees 2 things. A Brees should have let the ball out earlier and B he possibly could have gotten the ball out earlier if our WR's were getting open or could be trusted to get their hands on the ball.

Now we've seen Drew as well as McCown throw picks trying to toss one up to Brandin Cooks so that he can make a play. Fact of the matter is...he's not that guy and won't win many jump ball opportunities. He needs a compliment badly. Anyhow back to my point. You can upgrade Drews receiving options, and get better play from your RG position (Lelito is probably not far off from where Evans was...may be better) to assist with getting the ball out quicker and giving Drew more room to step up to avoid that pressure.

Fact is Jahri was in the backfield a lot last year and this does nothing to aid your Tackle so that he can focus using technique to fan a guy out wide.

Give Peat another year to play LG while Moving Lelito to RG (cant be worse than Jahri) and adding some competition via a draft pick. Your getting a minor upgrade on the interior at worst(because you know Peat will improve and Lelito or a rookie can't be much worse than Jahri was ). We've added the TE from the Colts who should give us a little bit more than Watson and closer to what Graham gave us as a solid Go To Option. With that being said the last piece IMHO would be to add a WR that can win 50/50 balls opposite Cooks. You can kind of just toss it up to him and let him nab the pass and have confident that he'll get his hands on it OR stop the defender from getting an INT.

Toss in a draft pick like Treadwell at WR and an OG like a Joe Dahl/Connor McGovern and it should immediately upgrade the offense to go along with guys getting better from the year before.

Rest of the picks you can use to go after Defense. The most important pieces in a 4-3 over are the MLB/3Tech/5Tech position. The Jack is afforded very good matchups and is only asked to do one thing......rush the passer. We've got our MLB(Laurinitis) and we've got our 5tech(Jordan) and we've Quasi got a 3tech in Fairley but he needs to be supplemented quickly as he's on a 1 year deal and is even less of a Guarantee than Laurinitis is. At least if something happens to Laurinitis Anthony is there to fill in. Should something happen to Fairley...we'll were back where we were last year as far as base passrush.

Treadwell/Vernon Butler would be ideal picks in both situations. You get one of the more important positions of the Dscheme locked up and then you get a Colston replacement. **think about the fact that we got Toon in the 4th because we knew the Day that Colston would move on was coming. We attempted to Groom Toon all those years and had he stayed on the team we would have been resigning him this year to his 2nd contract and as a legit Colston replacement. It didn't happen and now we have to go into this draft looking to fill it as Coleman is not that guy. He's got the size but his rail thin body does not make him an ideal slot option and his more outside receiver only and he was used in that capacity last year.

I want to do a write-up on Treadwell but I watched his FB game against Florida and it told me all i needed to know about him as a prospect. I Then went back and watched his other games but the Florida game was Ideal.

People harp on how the Gators decided not to put Hargreaves on him and instead used their 2nd best CB and a Safety over the top to play him. Truth is plenty of #1 WR's are afforded this treatment and isn't an uncommon tactic. Not to mention Hargreaves would have gotten bodied 1 on 1 no safety help. He was open quite a few times for TD's and possibly long gainers on slants/crossers where he beat his man off the line. Only problem is QB didn't see him SEVERAL times.

Treadwell has quick feet/burst off the snap. He rarely loses to press coverage and if we wanted him to play opposite cooks he'd have to do that. He may not have 4.3 speed but his ability to win off the line and his burst means that If a guy whiffs on the Jam (which he's already slow so this is going to be a tactic teams will use to slow him down more) he will get behind them QUICKLY to which his catch radius means you can loft the ball over the CB in front of the S and he's coming down with it(alabama game he got behind a CB that ran a 4.4 for an easy catch because the DB whiffed early). He's also very very competitive which can be a slight negative but he keeps it under control more than OBJ does. He also lets his blocking do the talking as he'll light guys up ALL GAME. Yet he isn't a whiner so he'll get lit up by a defender and then get back up. I've seen him take several big hits via safeties or guys just blind side blocking him and he pops RIGHT UP. Theres no quit in his game but he plays every down with the same energy.

The main negative and it happened in the Florida game is that because he wasn't targeted a lot he got out of rhythm in the game thus dropping a pass or two that did come to him later in the game. Yet he wasn't targeted a lot not because he wasn't winning but because of Shoddy QB play. With a good right handed QB and playing the Z position in this offense he'd be the #1 option on a lot of plays and I don't doubt his ability to win EARLY would see him come down with a lot of balls.

Oh the other note I have on Treadwell is it appears that Ole Miss offense did not huddle and he instead got the routes he was supposed to run from the sideline. THIS could definitely hinder his abilty to learn the offense because you don't know how he will adapt to being in the huddle and if his ability to learn the offense/spit out the calls and get lined up (something that was toons problem)

Spence seems more like a secondary pick should Treadwell not be there but thinking about how Loomis said "were going to focus on defense but not ignore offense" has me thinking we made those moves in FA to free us up to get Treadwell because the Offense is still the core of this team and when we were a very good offense we had a lot of talent at the WR position. Even though we make it seem like Drew can turn water into wine, and he probably can, I'm sure it helps with the taste if the water is Triple distilled.

.......................................................................................

So what can we say with that? He just said our guards are taking time to gel with Lelito and Kelemente and that they need to learn more. He also just said we need a jumpball receiver that can make plays and shut down ints. And he said that the saints have gone more into a WC offensive approach where they are relying on someone who can jump up and grab the ball and speed is just a bonus.

I didn't say he was. He just somewhat made me think it might be him with them both being very knowledgeable.

Zach Strief: Andrus Peat will take my job eventually - NFL.com

Hopefully AP soaks up as much on the job knowledge as he can from Strief.

That's not saying much.
