Less than three months after that failure in Denver, the New Orleans Saints are heading into a similar long-term quandary, staring at a significant commitment to an aging, elite quarterback, while also measuring how to survive his inevitable departure. The Saints are weighing two sizeable issues regarding their quarterback spot, two league sources told Yahoo Sports: the amount of guaranteed money that will be necessary to get a contract extension done with Drew Brees, and finding and properly grooming the player who will eventually replace him.

why am i doubting this? I feel like he will have a new deal prior to season start. I don't really think he is going to play the final year without an extension, but maybe I am wrong

I really wouldn't be surprised if he already has his mind made up he won't be back next year. I think he may want to try something else for his last couple of years. Wouldn't surprise me if they have a gentlemans agreement to keep it quiet so it doesn't hang over the season as a distraction or if Condon has made his price so high the Saints just can't possibly afford it.
It will be a gamble for Drew either way. If he gets injured this season his price will go way down.

Agreed.
Brees is calculating and manipulative when it comes to money. He missed games last year for the first time in a while, and he knows his recovery time is growing. He is not going to risk $50 million by heading into this year without a deal and taking a chance at an injury.

As for the comparison to Denver in the article...we have an Osweiler hiding somewhere? Also, Manning was hurt then benched. Not exactly the same as leading the league in passing. Brees had more TD's in weeks 8-9 than Manning had for the whole season

Manning also had several neck surgeries. He has fused vertebrae. That's the reason he fell off a cliff.

Why does it seem like there are no similar concerns regarding that aging QB in New England?

Sorry, but that is just plain crazy. There is no way Brees would leave Payton's offense that is designed specifically for him and skilled players with whom he has an excellent rapport to go end his career with a totally different offense with players with whom he has absolutely no rapport. To even suggest what you are suggesting is void of all logic and simply ludicrous.

All of the parties involved know that it is best for Brees to finish his career with New Orleans. There is no way Payton signs his extension without knowing that Brees will remain his QB for the foreseeable future.

Calculating and manipulative? Show me a real documented example of this behavior from Brees. I can buy calculating because Brees is very astute, but manipulative? I just don't buy that. You can tell a lot about a person by reading their autobiography and following them closely for over a decade. Manipulative is the antitheses of what I know of Brees. He is as straight forward and honest as a person can be based upon what I have seen and read and based upon what others that know him well have said about him.

Exactly

There is a looming possibility that Brees could have an expeditious decline in play, potentially as soon as next season. If the Saints lock themselves into guaranteed money comparable (or exceeding) the $65 million given to Rivers or Eli Manning last year, cap economics suggest it's a minimum three-year commitment.
I have never read so many commentators, blogs, fans, writers etc. describe a star player as either already "in decline" or about to be like they do with Drew Brees. Facts are the Saints offense hasn't been as good as '11 because they've replaced just about every starter but maybe 2, and one of those left standing has been Brees. In that perceived "decline" offensively, the offense still ends up top 5 or sometimes top 2 in the league weekly or overall. Yet all I read, repeatedly, is how noodley armed Brees is, how old he is, how weak he is - when he finishes leading passer, leading TD's, stat after stat, year after year.
