The Saints signed rookie tight end and long snapper Garrett Griffin on Monday.

Griffin had impressed the Saints in a rookie minicamp tryout last month. Griffin recently graduated from the Air Force Academy and his NFL status was up in the air due to his military committment.

Griffin caught eight touchdown passes in his career at Air Force and also played linebacker and handled some snapping duties. It’s unclear if the Saints see him strictly as a tight end prospect or also see him as a long snapper.

The Saints already had six tight ends on their roster. Before adding Griffin the Saints had just one long snapper, Justin Drescher. The long-snapping job has been Drescher’s for the past five seasons.

The Saints created a roster spot for Griffin by waiving rookie defensive end Mitchell Loewen with a non-football injury designation.

I'm not sure of he has been cleared by the Air Force to play yet. He could be the next Ozzie Newsome but the signing would be useless if they refuse to let him play.

Long snapper is such a critical position. Drescher does a fine job. Damn Payton! Leave the position alone and quit meddling with special teams players......oh, and fire McMahon so you don't have to meddle.

Payton has the same problem of meddling with the defense because of bad coaching there as well.

There might be other plans for Griffin? and I would agree that Coach needs to stay out of the day to day until a true problem presents itself.
