Would Josh McCown be affordable as a back up?

McCown:
Josh McCown is an athletically gifted, but many questions remain unanswered regarding his ability as a player. With a much better than average arm, McCown can make all the throws necessary to play in the NFL. He has been inconsistent at the professional level, some of this can be attributed to playing on some poor Arizona Cardinals teams. This young quarterback continues to have problems recognizing defensive schemes, throws into coverage often, but throws nice ball, hitting receivers in stride when in rhythm. McCown is not a patient quarterback, with experience and maturity he may become a legitimate starting quarterback.

Does anyone have any idea what kind of contract he might command? If it is within a $100,000ish of Bouman, wouldn't that be a serious upgrade at our 2nd spot?

Is he not under contract? If he is available, he would def be an upgrade over Bouman IMO, even though I would still prefer Mike McMahon.

McCown is a RFA, but I\'d part with a 6th rounder (maybe even a 5th for him).

McMahon:
Mike McMahon is the type of quarterback which entices you with his athletic ability and make-up. But, his inconsistency and questionable decision making process is the primary reason why he has been a backup with the Detroit Lions. McMahon throws a very catch able ball, but his pocket awareness has been questionable, with this athletic quarterback far too often moving out of the pocket rather than stepping up into the pocket. Turnovers have been an issue with McMahon and he must take better care of the ball, while improving his recognition of the defense for him to be anything more than a backup quarterback. McMahon is young enough that a team may provide him the opportunity to earn a starting spot.
Sounds like he has some problems that are VERY frustrating to fans of the Black and Gold.

Yeah, but they can take this line from McCown\'s write up:
with experience and maturity he may become a legitimate starting quarterback.
and apply it to McMahon IMO. Again, either/or should be an upgrade.

I suppose I\'m not sold on McMahon yet. I\'m also pretty sure that Kingsbury and Finlen are upgrades over Bouman.

It just seems to me that McCown has fewer problems and is less of a risk. He also doesn\'t appear suffer from a case of the \"being like the guy we have in may frustrating ways.\"

It has been suggested we take O\'Sullivan back for a sixth; I think McCown is a better bet.

Fetch Monster is an upgrade to Bouman at the quarterback position .

Josh McCown could put pressure on Brooks and Hasbeen aint gonna want that .Hasbeen will most likely take a token QB in the draft and say he has addressed the position .

There have been a few rumors of Saints trading AB. Perhaps Haz has become less enamored with him? With McCarthy gone, perhaps Haz will listen to arguments concerning AB as our future QB? I don\'t think it is impossible that we would consider McCown; of course, I\'m not going to get my hopes up for that.

we really, really need to upgrade our 2nd string QB. Either Mcown or Mcmahon would be a great pick up. even warner would be huge!

Uh, J? Not sure you read that thing on McCown, but try again. I\'ve done this before just to make a point, but read it like this...

\"[Aaron Brooks] is an athletically gifted, but many questions remain unanswered regarding his ability as a player. With a much better than average arm, [Brooks] can make all the throws necessary to play in the NFL. He has been inconsistent at the professional level...\"

You get the point. Why sign baby Brooks?

Do the same with McMahon and you have to wonder about either of them. I\'d probably entertain any QB who can compete at least for a backup role, but I don\'t know if these guys solve the problem long term.

I think the QB position you deal with last order of buisness. Its not a need. You have the number one guy in Brooks you have a vet in Bouman and you have 2 number 3 guys you take a chance and develop either to end up being a number two guy or gets good enough to take over the number one spot one day or becomes trade bait.

You don\'t want to go out and get a guy you are going to pay a chunk of change to ride the bench, especially when you have a year coming up where you are going to have to deal with some tough cap decisions.
