2009 assessing

Detroit week 1

With so much fuss about the defense helping Drew and the run game. I decided to look back at 2009. Week 1, we got two turnovers. Only one resulted in points.

The biggest thing I looked at was the special teams play that could get us to the 40 yard line. Nonetheless Drew put up back to back 60 yard drives to go up 14-0. Then when we were starting further back we punted back to back. And then Drew turned it over. The good thing is Drew attempted a hail mary and it got picked off in the endzone(and it was the as usual inconsistent Henderson who was not good at making TD catches like that but stretching the field). However, the lions took over at a usual position after a punt or kickoff return. Then the saints put together a long drive, and then another one at the 40 when Drew was throwing non stop.

As for the running game it was no different than last year. Brees was still in many crucial third downs where often receivers would not make plays to stay on the field. However, we had talent then and Shockey and Henderson were the main third down conversion recepients. Of course we had Mike Bell doing all of the ground work with Reggie sprinkled in. I however did see quit a bit of 1-3 yard runs from them which shows the passing game was still the decider.

Brees threw six TDs in this game.

As for defense, Sharper got two ints neither were TDs. And neither resulted in points. We did well defensively against Detroit but because of the fast paced offense we gave them too much breathing room. We allowed 20 offensive points to them.

I will look at eagles next.

Philadelphia week 2

This one was a tough first half and in the second half back to back turnovers turned this game into a blowout. This may be the kind of game the defense advocates want for Drew. However, the offense got one long drive put together. Then, they somewhat stalled, and tried to run the ball too much(this is obviously what SP wants is those screens). But then Drew had to go and took the lead. In the second half he had big plays off two turnovers. He had one long drive result in a fg(and it was right at their goalline), and another in a TD. They were playing prevent late but had the game won.

They did run a bit here(still needing many 3rd down conversions). And Drew benefitted from the turnovers. This was one of those games people like to talk about what made our offense good.

I'll do bills tomorrow.

Re: 2009 assessing

After the Saints beat the Eagles, I knew the Saints were gonna be sumpin' special that year. I absolutely overpaid for the ticket that year to go, but knowing how good the team was and actually having a Sunday off (!) there was no way I was NOT gonna miss it (being a Western New Yorker and not knowing how many times I would get to see them personally).
Both teams I remember struggled a little bit in the first half but I knew it was gonna be a matter of time before the Saints got going. I came back from my halftime beer (with the score 10-7), sat down and yelled "Is it 27-7 yet?!" (not realizing how prophetic it would be).
The Bills' defense got absolutely winded the second half and it was the Pierre and Drew show after that in the fourth Q. The Bills' Trent Edwards would not throw to T.O. all day after all the hype and $ going his way before the season and the fans in my section were pissing on Trent the whole day. While Drew was great, I remember the Saints' defense being remarkably better. They just didn't give Buffalo anything.

Big reveal: Me in the corner of the right goal post just over the crossbar rockin' the Colston jersey, enjoying the Drew pre-game rally. The three shirtless mooks were throwing peanuts at the back of my head 2nd and 3rd quarter until 3 lady Bills' fans sat booing in my ear until the end of the game but was awarded ceremonial beads for the win.

Re: 2009 assessing

I was getting ready to post the bills but you elaborated that perfectly.

Yet, PT was nowhere to be seen in the first half. It seemed Meachem could not do anything in this type of game. Colston had the CB on him(McKelvin?), basically only Henderson was effective in the passing game but not by much. The screens to Reggie were happening too much(reminded me of Chicago first half 08), and some guy Hamilton(forgot who this guy was) was taking all of the ground carries. Again, the screens are just not going to work every time. In the second half, PT was on the field and the game changed(just like Chicago 08 second half). Defense did play well here. Had we not had that defense I don't know if we would have won. But that could be attributed to delaying PT. This was not the best passing game for Drew. I think there were weather problems here but the picture did not look like that. Buffalo had a good secondary then. It was their run defense that was not good. I would say back to back road effect.

Jets are next.

Re: 2009 assessing

Jets.

It was the same situation as the bills except saints could move the ball a little better. The offense seemed 50/50 here. My guess is because Revis complicated some things. The screens happened again but they appeared to be halfway decent given the jets defense was busy defending the passing game. The saints failed on a couple redzone attempts going for it on 4th down when they probably could have gotten a FG. It didn't really matter given the outcome.

I did actually do that but apparently people didn't want to hear my concerns about the offense's problems. Look at where I broke down the plays against Arizona, TB, Philadelphia.

This thread is about examining the philosophy behind what worked in 2009. Many said we ran the ball a lot. I am trying to see from reading these play by plays what our offense was really like before killing the clock.

Re: 2009 assessing

gotta get respect for the run.

Gotta be able to close out game on the ground eating up the clock.

Saints have not had this for more than a few years.

eating up the clock to close out a game is playoff football.
