Frequent missed assignments, alignment errors are becoming a thing of the past for the Saints defense

1 Attachment(s)
One of the first things guard Tim Lelito noticed when the New Orleans Saints stepped on the field for their first practice: There was a better flow.

Last summer, the tide crashed into dam after dam, creating a choppy current. The defense would get lined up. A whistle would blow. A coach would yell, and the defense would get lined up again.

It was constant. Confusion reigned. But that's no longer the case: The walls are down, and the players are just playing.

"They're getting aligned faster. Everyone knows the assignments," Lelito said. "Compared to last year, there's hardly any (missed assignments) this year on the defensive side of the ball. We're stopping practice a lot less. Coach isn't blowing the whistle: 'Hey, line up here. What are you doing over there?' It's better for us, because we're getting more reps in and getting better as a team."

It's the Dennis Allen effect. Realistically, there's only so much difference a coach can make on a team. He can design the perfect scheme and teach all of its nuances, but the players have to go out and execute.

But a coach can put his players in a better position to succeed and make sure they aren't shooting themselves in the foot with mindless mistakes or as the result of poor teaching. At that, Allen already has made a noticeable difference.

I really like the sound of this. The less a defensive player thinks the better.

rob was certainly the issue...the fact that he would completely overhaul the scheme from mini-camp to training camp is really unbelievable. I can't say our defense is going to light the world on fire, but if they're not noticeably better I'd be surp[rised. Plus this has to help the offense get ready faster too.

Exactly.
I'll gladly forego the elaborate schemes and multiple blitz packages if we can just always have 11 guys on the field who know their assignments each play

Yeah! Defense is really all about getting to the football and being in a bad mood when you arrive.

Well, for one thing, we now have only one defensive coordinator, so that alone should prove less confusing for those rocket scientist on defense...

Let's see it against another team they haven't been practicing against.

TUE., Aug. 9 TBD Gillette Stadium Joint Practice with Patriots - Open

This should be interesting.

I always said the RR wasn't a good communicator and teacher. You could tell the dude was unorganized and probably a slob just by his general appearnce. DA seems to be the exact opposite - the anti-Ryan

I was watching Coach Payton's post practice presser, and when a reporter mentioned that Tim said they were getting more reps without all the mental mistakes on defense, Payton kind of gave him the look.

"Who said that?"

Reporter: "Tim"

"Who?"

Reporter: "Tim Lelito"

*Payton smiles* "Oh"

Haha I think Tim is about to get a lot less talkative to the media after Sean pulls him aside.

I think Rob Ryan was scared to call the players on their BS also.
If they played badly he was too bothered trying to be their supporter rather than be a coach.

That's why i liked GW, if a player played badly he was straight in their grill about it.

After seeing Allen get in Browners face, I'm confident Dennis can be better than Rob Ryan.

It is 4 days into camp and the same stuff was said last year, and the year before. All empty words until they can do it in a game. I will hold off on getting excited until I see it when the regular season comes along.

The narrative for the Saints has been different this preseason. I think we might surprise a few this season.

After all the sophistication is boiled down, it's just every man whip your man.
And after you whip yours, help your brother.
We just need guys to hold their own and control their piece of the field.
Guys don't have to be great on every play; just the plays that come their way.
If our defensive can get back to the middle of the pack, we are going to make another run.
