Obum Gwacham's hot start to training camp could pay dividends for the Saints

New Orleans Saints defensive end Obum Gwacham has spent a lot of time with the first unit during the first few days of training camp and so far, he seems to be comfortable in that role.

Gwacham picked up 2 sacks in team drills Sunday however the 6-foot-5, 246-pound former college receiver is planning to rest on the day's success.

"Nothing is set in stone," Gwacham said. "It could be anyone running with the ones so it's not a time to get comfortable with anything."

He did said after Sunday's practice that he feels more confident this season and thinks that he's come a long way.

"It's nice that I'm able to be here with this team during camp because I was with a different team last year," he said. "It's nice that I can grow with everyone and we can go through the struggles of camp days together."

Being at camp Gwacham has been working with Saints defensive line coach Bill Johnson and pass rush specialist Brian Young to improve his technique. Specifically, he worked on his zero-step technique which he says involves initiating contact with the offensive lineman or tight end first.

"It allows you to push-pull him and it makes it much easier to control them," he said. "So that's one of the biggest things that I worked on and I've definitely seen it pay off."

Saints head coach Sean Payton said the key with Gwacham's development will be how he handles playing against the run.

"That'll be a challenge," he said. "That'll be a little more new."

Overall Gwacham thinks training camp has gone well so far.

"We have Kasim Edebali, Davis Tull and myself and we are all competing right now," Gwacham said. "I think those guys have been doing a great job as well and we are all pushing each other. We obviously want the best person in that position to help our team win and thats kind of the main focus."[/I]

That's a little concerning. I'm not being pessimistic or anything but Gwacham seems to have the inside track to being our starting DE and he has 6 weeks to learn how to play the run.

Will the challenge be learning to play the run or having the physical ASSets to anchor against the run?

Well he's beefed up from a year ago, going from 246 to 270 so holding his ground against the tackles should be a little easier.

He's only been at the position for two years, but at least he has the coaching now
Receiver and special teams player in college, and also high jumped 6'10'' and competed in the triple jump, so he must have some powerful legs to get that 250 airborne
I'm a little surprised he is getting reps ahead of Richardson, but I guess they are trying to get an extended look
