NEW OFFSEASON, SAME SAINTS
It’s been the same old, same old for the Saints this offseason.

While there was early talk of acquiring Pierce before he signed with the Giants, and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers outside linebacker Ian Gold, who signed with the Denver Broncos, New Orleans was slow out of the blocks.

The Saints did sign veteran Philadelphia Eagles offensive guard Jermaine Mayberry on Saturday to play right tackle, but he seems best suited to play inside at guard at this stage of his career.
While Mayberry did play tackle earlier in his career, he has really turned up his game since moving inside at guard. His biggest strength is his run blocking game, not pass blocking.

But the Saints are apparently going to ask the 31-year-old to play right tackle.

The Saints realize many high-priced free agents haven’t played well for the clubs they signed for.

But when you have $9 million to spend in free agency, you should have to show the fans you are committed to being the very best.

And that means spending more than you would normally want to spend on a player or players.

I fully expect the Saints to jump back into the free-agent market in the near future.

N.O. HOPES TO PASS TEBUCKY
The Saints have finally come to the conclusion Tebucky Jones is not worth the money they are paying him (No kidding!) and are searching for another starting free safety.

Jones, who signed a $29.5 million, seven-year contract two years ago, has been a bust in New Orleans. While he has been a starter since Day 1, Jones has failed to live up to the expectations every Saints official laid out when they signed him.

While there has been talk of possibly trading Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars for safety Donovin Darius, the Saints now seem to be looking at Bucs free safety Dwight Smith, instead.

Smith, a former standout cornerback at Akron University, is an aggressive ballhawk who also excels on special teams. But he also comes with baggage: Over the past couple of seasons, Smith has fought gun charges twice.

While Saints owner Tom Benson insists he needs money and commitments from the state to be competitive, his front office has failed to show the same force in trying to do whatever it can to achieve a high status in the league.

Again, what we have witnessed is another example of a team content with being in the middle of the pack. The Saints want to win -- everybody does -- but they don’t seem to want to ante up when the price gets a little high.

Either you get in the game or you don’t play.

I hate to say it, but mediocrity seems to be just right for the folks on Airline Drive.

I wasn\'t gonna comment on Mike D., but....

Mike D. is a regular contributor on another Saints\' site I\'m a member of and even his most loyal fans are turning on the guy.

Mike D. was dissed by the Saints\' organization a while back and now it seems like he has some sort of axe to grind.

Mike D. has some valid points, but he never misses an opportunity to bash this team. And when he does has some valid points, he often carries it WAY too far.

He recently criticized Haslett for not starting James Allen, Bockwoldt, and Watson sooner than what he did. He said what was really SAD is if not for injuries we would have never saw them. Hey, sometimes it works out like that but you can\'t blame Haslett.

Watson started from the jump. And who can blame Haslett for not starting a rookie 7th round draft pick in Colby Bockwoldt?

Didn\'t you report that Mike D said we tried to sign Pierce, and use that as proof that we tried to get a LB? And now I can\'t trust him, or is it just selective when I should trust him?

Mike D. has some inside contacts, I assume. I\'ve seen him ahead of the pack when it comes to some things. But his OPINIONS are slanted BIG TIME!

This was before we got Smith so we will see what happens when he reports on the Smit signing and use that as a barometer. I think it was a very good move to get Smith. We\'ll see what Miek says. Fair? BTW, he has the same questions about Mayberry at RT that MANY others have voiced as well, so I guess most opinions are \"slanted.\" :P

Not here at B&G! No way that\'s been happening!

Though, I think most everyone here has been much more objective in their views as of late.

No ones saying we\'re super bowl bound and no one is saying we suck, either. Lately there\'s been some good insight which has been a much welcomed sight for me..

I\'ve always liked Mike Detllier, and I respect his opinion on players quite a bit. One of the best local talent evaluators in the media in my opinion. He really does his homework.

But I\'ve also noticed a pessimistic bias when he talks about this current team. It does seem he has an axe to grind with someone. If there is a downside to ANY move we make he\'ll shout it early and often.

But with that being said if he does say something good about this team or a Saints player you can bet you\'re bottom dollar it isn\'t hype. I think he\'d rather pull out his own wisdom teeth than give anyone unnecessary credit on this team.

I also like him on WWL better than Buddy D\'s best day. He and Kenny do a great job, IMO.

You wonder why members don\'t post as much here, well here you go. Figure it out.
Seems like everytime you post that you have some sort of axe to grind, gator. What gives dude?

Who doesn\'t post here as much? YOU? Who are you talking about? That was completely out-of-bounds.

I gave a specific example of how Mike D. is slanted with his opinions. You, on the other hand, really didn\'t back up your opinions with much. Except to say Mike D. is critical of this team and that\'s the way you like it.

Lately it seems you just come around to criticize \"some folks\" and haven\'t really added a lot to the converstion.

The scary thing about his article is that it all can be true. We\'ve all griped about how slow the team started free agency. We\'ve all griped about some of the past free agent signings. So it looks to me as if he\'s just calling it as most of us see it.

And yes Billy there are some that don\'t post as much anymore, I won\'t say why, because i\'m not them, but I have heard some rumors. So you 2 chill and let it go. Let\'s get on to more signings.
