This org needs to start drafting for need instead of BPA. Especially when the Oline is that bad.

You are seeing it is much easier to fix an offense than it is a defense. But this team is going backwards trying to get away from their philosophy.

Well, the past two drafts we pretty much did do just that...

We needed an interior defensive lineman and took one in the first round - Sheldon Rankins (check)...

We needed a new "X" receiver and took one in the second round in Mike Thomas (check)...

We needed a Free Safety because the one we have loves the tub and we traded two picks (3rd (78th) pick and 4th (112th) pick) (check, but problem)...

This is where Loomis fails as a GM; the Mickster overpaid for Byrd, who's been nothing short of a disaster of a signing; two seasons virtually non-existent return, production; and guaranteed money that leaves the player with no motivation to get back to the field and play to a level commensurate with the compensation; we could've retained a first round pick for less in Malcolm Jenkins...

Because of the need of a Free Safety to be "available" on Sundays, he then compounded the problem spending two picks, the 3rd round and 4th round picks to reach into the second round to take Bell, who's not starting and probably won't be because of the financial commitment to Byrd; this is f*cked logic and p*ss poor draft/personnel management...

Now remember the 3rd and 4th round picks we traded to get Bell?

Later in the draft we decide to get an insurance for Rankins, or help on the inside and we trade two (2) more picks, our fifth (152nd) pick and a future fifth round pick to take a "project" in Onyemata; I'd agree the potential is there, but why are we developing players when we need performance now; if Onyemata is playing significant minutes by season's end, that could help in leverage when we have to revisit, assess retaining Fairley...

But here's the thing...

Had we not reached on Bell, stayed pat and selected a player in the third round like a Safety (possibly Vonn Bell), a Guard (Joe Thuney), perhaps a Linebacker (Nick Virgil was my choice), we then still could've taken Onyemata with our own 4rd (112th) pick and still had our 5rd (152nd) pick to select a need (plenty of Guards, Linebackers and Defensive Tackles were still on the board) and we wouldn't have had to give a up a future pick from next year...

We hit some salvation with our 7rd pick with RB Daniel Lasco; which we needed because we're over-committed at RB with regards to the salary cap with both Ingram and Spiller...

It is these bad cap/personnel decisions and draft management is why we still have personnel/position holes and why we're handicapping ourselves before we take the field...

Sometimes I think Payton has to be in the spotlight and this is one of those ways. I like Bell and Omi. but 2 picks apiece for both I didn't care for those picks could have been used elsewhere. Remember Ingram being picked the same spot as his dad, Payton's got to put on a show.

Don't think Payton has "got to be the smartest guy in the draft room" syndrome...

If he does, then it's on his boss, Mickey Loomis, to call him on it which reinforces criticism of Loomis' draft management...
