With the initial 53-man roster set for the regular season, the New Orleans Saints on Sunday turned attention to the 10-man practice squad.

And part of the process includes bringing back a defensive contributor from the 2015 season.

The Saints plan to sign Bobby Richardson to the practice squad, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The Saints, however, are not planning to sign defensive end Davis Tull to the practice squad, according a source familiar with Tull's status.

Blah Blah Blah

-CB Brian Dixon: He played all 16 games for the Saints the past two years, primarily as one of the top special teams options. The 26-year-old lost his roster spot Saturday in part because running back Daniel Lasco looks ready for a big role on special teams.

-C Jack Allen: The undrafted rookie from Michigan State spent most of the summer as the second-team center, but the Saints chose guard Landon Turner as the final lineman on the roster.

- WR Jake Lampman: The 6-foot, 205-pound Lampman signed with the Saints following a successful tryout during rookie minicamp in May. The rookie, who entered the league out of Ferris State, finished the preseason with one catch for 19 yards.

- OL John Fullington: Fullington, who is listed at 6-5, 300 pounds, originally entered the league in 2014 as an undrafted free agent out of Washington State with the Green Bay Packers.

- FB Austin Johnson: Johnson, who has been with the Saints since 2013, was waived Saturday after losing the position battle with John Kuhn.

- TE Garrett Griffin: The 6-4, 240-pound Griffin, a rookie out of the U.S. Air Force Academy, joined the Saints in June. He had one catch for 14 yards during the preseason.

- The Star Press reported wide receiver Jordan Williams-Lambert, a rookie out of Ball State, is signing with the practice squad, but he's not on the official list. The Saints have two openings.

Once again the saints brain trust do not raid the waiver wire or much less add talent that was cut by other clubs.

This is one arrogant point year after year I just do not understand.

The Davis Tull hype may have been a bit much.

"Is Richardson eligible for the practice squad?"

YES it looks like he indeed is!

I don't understand it either, it makes no since at all.

Why waste one of the limited practice squad positions on a player you haven't been looking at closely over the prior few months? This is not arrogance, it is common sense.

This is simply more of that "grass is always greener" mentally that I mentioned recently. Yes, I am sure it happens occasionally, but I'll wager that an extremely high percentage of initial practice squad signings come from the team's original 90 man roster all across the league.

As you point out, it doesn't make since, but it does make perfect sense. ;)

That was one of the new rules implemented along with the 10 man limit recently.

How big is the practice squad?

Two years ago, the NFL and the NFL Players Association agreed to a temporary expansion of the practice squad to ten players. That expansion was set to expire this year, but was renewed in the offseason. That will allow each team to carry 10 additional players throughout the season.

Eligibiilty

The standard eligibility for a player to be added to the practice squad is he is a free agent and has not accrued two years of NFL service. A player can only be on a practice squad for three seasons total in his career (six weeks on a practice squad in a seasons counts as a season for these purposes).

The league does allow for exceptions to the less than two-year rule, which was expanded with the 10-player expansion agreement this year. Teams may keep up to four players on their practice squad who have accrued two seasons of NFL experience, which allows a fringe player the chance to stay with the team, even if he already has been in the league, while also allowing the teams to keep more veteran players.

Accrued seasons are earned by being on the active (53-man) roster for a team for six games in a single regular season.

I really like the Fullington kid, he was solid with the live bullets flying. Granted, it was probably against 2nd and 3rd stringers, but hey, you deal with whatever you're presented. Glad he's on the PS.
