Updating previous reports, the three-year deal S Jay Bellamy signed with the New Orleans Saints has base salaries of $800,000 (2005), $850,000 (2006) and $800,000 (2007).

I saw that. $800,000? Is it just me or does that seem like too much for a potential backup S?

Not really. Remember that since Bellamy is old enough that his salary and his cap hit are vastly different. Another amount of creative accounting by the NFL. If you assume that T-Buck stays in the rotation and moves to Bellamy\'s spot, Bellamy takes Gleason\'s role or Mitchell does, you really have a player-coach in Bellamy. That also gives you insurance in case Jones or Smith get hurt. Not a bad move when you think of it.

A first in Saints history, a move that resembles making sense. What a concept???

Just remember to stay positive, and say. 8 And 8 is really great, I cannot AB hate. I\'ll be coastal if I go postal. GoossssFFAAAAAAAAAABAAAAAAAAA!! Also begin to chant. Mike D is a Fraud!! He\'s a Saint Hater! Hazlett is a Football Gaud!!! GOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSFAAAAAAABAAAAAAAA!!!

There are many less-talented backups in the league getting paid a whole lot more. Paying a backup with potential to start (like bellamy) 800,000 is a very good deal.

potential backup but he is <gulp> da man again. could he lead the team in tackles 3 years in a row? if so, i hope we will be talking about drafting matt lenhart this time next year.

Well, then I disagree. Although I can see where you guys are coming from, $800,000 for Bellamy seems exorbitant to me. He had one over his head year with us and has been exposed as old and slow, and rarely making plays these days. It\'s not gonna get better. And as far a fill in role, why the hell would I pay $800,00 for a fill in? If he is a player/coach, take off the uniform and go make $100,000 like any other position assistant. Keep Gleason.

He\'s still starting so the contract is justified. Even if he was a backup, it\'s still not bad because he would still see lots of playing time especially on running downs. What\'s the minimum for an NFL veteran with his senority? For a starting safety he\'s probably a bargain.

The minimum salary structure for 2005 is as follows:

Years Salary
Rookies $230,000
Second-year players $305,000
Third-year $380,000
Fourth-year $455,000
Fifth- through seventh-year $540,000
Eighth- through tenth-year $665,000
10 or more years $765,000

Then I would rather have let him go and let Mitchell see the field more. And kept Gleason. I wondered why he was so quick to sign without even looking around. I guess I have my answer.

Ultimately...he has earned that pay...

I\'m not a huge bellamy fan, but, he does produce in tackles...

Can\'t really let him go until we for sure have someone better to fill in...and even if we draft Davis..You have to have a back up plan...Holdouts, or Injuries are just a fact of the game now...

I would have taken that $800,000 and added it to what I was throwing at Hartwell and made a push for him, then drafted Davis, but that\'s just me. I don\'t think he\'s worth it, especially for two more years beyong the coming one, but oh well.

haha sw you Hartwell junkie. LKelley you are like a computer! :P

So basically 800,00 is like a 35 thousand dollar raise... not bad at all. I would love to have Gleason back, but with the re-signing of McAfee and Mitchell now leading the special teams unit, looks worse and worse everyday. Gleason and Mitchell made a deadly combo blocking punts hopefully we\'ll work something out. We all know how I feel about Mitchell... ;)

What you may be seeing is the \"experience\" factor. Also, he doesn\'t cost that much against the cap. Your point is well taken on the Hartwell thingy. Also, remember that if Gleason goes, as it looks like he will, we are going to be short at special teams and safety. Bellamy closes that gap. Also, you never know what will befall Bellamy in the three years. But, 800K is chump change in the NFL. So, let\'s enjoy him while we have him. One thing for sure, he\'s a TEAM player from the start.

That looks like chump-change to me. I think we got a good deal. A middle of the road starting SS, already knows the system, is a fantatsic plan B if Mitchell doesn\'t progress or the Jones to SS idea fails.
I still think a mid-round strong safety is on our draft day wish list. And if Davis is still there he may be the man. A year or two at SS, and if he bulks up slide him over to LB.

This team has a reputation for being cheap. I\'m surprised anyone would complain about slightly overpaying for a player that played pretty well for us last year. Compared to another safety on this team we robbed Jay.

Well be surprised bud cause I am complaining. That\'s Hartwell\'s money he is stealing. ;)

Hmm, my argument was we were overpaying period. Seems like we agree. :o

And Hartwell would be taking Deuce\'s money ;)

I don\'t think we\'re overpaying for him, and if we were, its very little. My point was so many think we\'re cheap yet will complain about what they believe is overpaying.

Based on Bellamy\'s play on the field over the past 2 seasons, in which he out perfomed Tebucky Jones and Mel Mitchell, I think that\'s a fairly small salary to pay.

If it\'s one thing I\'ve learned, you don\'t go cutting players that are performing unless you\'ve got a proven guy to replace him. Rookies usally don\'t perform that well. Some do, some don\'t. We know what we have in Bellamy.

Yeah. an old slow guy who rarely makes interceptions, but will make 80 tackles cause he is too slow to be used in coverage. I am willing to bet a paycheck Thomas Davis would outperform Bellamy in his rookie year. But, to each his own.

Keep in mind that there\'s a BIG difference in SS and FS. SS plays in a \"box\" where speed isn\'t nearly of a concern. They play a BIG role in run support. Which is why you see Bellamy making so many tackles in the running game.

In pass defense, Bellamy isn\'t the best in the world. But he\'s experienced and knows how to get in position.

Now, if we get no pass rush and Bellamy has to cover the reciever for a long time, he will, and has, got beaten.

I think Bellamy will be fine, in \'04.

Seems like a non issue to me. What did Pathon make this year? Three times that. 800K is a drop in the bucket and Bellemy is a Haslett guy (for better or worse).

I\'m not saying I\'m in love with Bellamy, I think anyone could pile up tackles at the safety spot on our team. He has made a few plays and been durable, but he has been a constant on a bad secondary. I think they know what they get with him and they like that. he is certainly not getting any quicker.

I agree that it was interesting that Bellamy was considered a priority signing. He\'s an average safety who is getting old who just knows the system (if you want to call it that). I would imagine it would be easy to maintain status quo or improve in that slot.

The thing I don\'t get is the suggestion that we could have used that money to sign Hartwell. He is asking for a 10 million $$ signing bonus. Did we have 9.2 mil and the 800 broke us? I seriously doubt it

The point was the money could be used to sweeten a deal to Hartwell yasoon. I guess that was missed somehow. NOONE said we were on the verge of getting Hartwell, but $800,000 dollars more toward whatever we WOULD offer him sure couldn\'t hurt.
