Clayton: Howard to Seattle?

March 9, 2005
Could Seahawks make move for Howard?
The Saints hope to have a Darren Howard trade by the end of the week, and one team to watch is the Seahawks. Desperate for defensive help after cutting linebacker Anthony Simmons and losing cornerback Ken Lucas and defensive end Chike Okeafor in free agency, the Seahawks are running out of options to get help at defensive end. They aren't as interested in Titans cornerback Andre Dyson, who wants and should get around $5 million a year. They are inquiring about Broncos restricted free agent Kelly Herndon, a cornerback. But to get that defensive end help, they may have to trade for Howard or Broncos defensive end Trevor Pryce.

Tebucky Jones likely to be released
Watch for the Saints to release free safety Tebucky Jones before next week. He is due a $400,000 roster bonus. After the Saints signed Dwight Smith at free safety and re-signed Jay Bellamy at strong safety, there is now no need for Jones, who is being shopped around in a trade.

All I know is, if they move Howard, they better do something smart with whatever they get for him. If it\'s Seattle, unless it\'s Matt Hassleback, they don\'t have a player that I see fitting a need of ours. That probably means the Saints will have draft picks and cap money. Great - sounds like the last 3 years, when they spent it oh so wisely. :)

Then the I have a hard time justifying a trade.

Just stop and think about it for a second. Let\'s say we get a second for Howard. Think he\'s more valuable to the team than, say, I dunno, Devry Henderson?!?!

I just don\'t see anyone giving up a number one unless we offer something else. trading pics in another round maybe. There has been talk before Saints willing to part with him for a secong and no takers. Until a team gets needy enough... I don\'t see a number one pick, Seahawks I give they are starting to get worried but they still don\'t seem to be in a situation where they\'d give up a number one. Plus side for us there are a lot of talent in the 2-3 round and clears up cap room for next year.

We will def get a second. There is no doubt in my mind about that. But a first is not out of the question. Howard has produced like a first rounder, and the Hawks just lost Chike Okeafor. It\'s funny how guys say draft picks are gambles(not specifically you Euph) but then scoff at giving up a pick for a guy who is not a gamble and has proven he can perform at a high level in this league. We can\'t afford him, but somebody can and will trade for him. I\'d throw in T-Buck to get the first. ;)

ok... T Jones... you get your first rounder! Draft is a gamble but this year its a bit different. There is a lot more talent out there then the past few years, across the board. I suspect even you see that?

I\'d say you could come up with 6 names in the first 3 rounds you\'d like to have say from the 23rd on down?

No doubt the draft is deep. But wasn\'t the draft a few years back with McNabb deep in QBs? Remember 1999? Tim Couch, Akili smith, Cade McNown, with donovan and Daunte. That was supposed to be the year to get a QB. Deepest class in years. 3 out of 5 busts. All first rounders. In the 2nd round you even had Shaun King. 3rd round Brock Huard. So out of 7 first day players at a \"deep\" position, 5 are doing diddly poo. It\'s still a gamble. But yes, this year\'s draft does APPEAR deeper than most, especially on defense.

cha ching..see I think if we really try hard we can get some more picks...just don\'t get two first and trade them up for another defensive lineman...

I never said that draft McNabb draft was deep but most of those QB\'s are still in uniform though... unlike a Ryan Leaf. You are right there was a lot of talk back then about the QB position. This year\'s draft is different... there is lots of talent across the board at every position. I like the OL and D talent the most though, even at WR there are a few thats going to slip and be steals. 3 WR I like whom hardly get any mentioning.

Chris Henry? I like him. . But I dig what you are saying, I really do. But IMO, a team will give us a decent draft pick for Howard. We\'ll just have to wait and see.

I bet the Saints might have beeen trying to wait and let the F.A. pool on DE dwindle down ..then bust out with a guy like Howard...

His value right now is greater than it was 3 weeks ago..just out of lack of competition...

I definitely agree with that. He was already the best DE going in, so with players like Carter and Hayward off the market, he has to be a guy teams are looking hard at.

It really does make sense...If it be Seatlle..cool..right now it\'s do or die for alot of teams to get a solid DE..

And we just happen to have the best one available...

Let the bidding war begin...I bet you within 10 days...we have a deal going on...and a pretty big one at that.

Oh man if we were to acquire another first(Dallas), goodness we\'d be able to move up. DJ here we come! Wishful thinking, I\'ll settle for a 2nd rounder though :P

even for dj-i don\'t want to trade multiple picks to move up..i\'d rather get scores of players that are good than one who is maybe great-maybe not...

The Saints are gonna keep sending players on defense to Dallas and build them one of the finest defenses in the league .... ;)
