Loomis believes in building through the draft and complementing the roster through free agency. His background in managing the salary cap helps immensely in that effort, because in today's NFL landscape cap management cannot be separated from personnel decision. Loomis understands how the two areas connect when completing a roster and the Saints have never been hounded by cap restraints since he took control of the franchise, evidenced by the active role the club takes each year in the free agent market under his stewardship.

He has done a pretty good job when you break it down..and look at the accomplishments he has managed to achieve while here...

Having a guy who can effectively manage the cap helps out in many ways...

To me, effectively managing the cap means doing two things:

1) Staying out of cap trouble.
Loomis has done a very good job of this. Year in and year out the Saints have plenty of money under the cap and can continue to sign players.

2) Using that money to sign good players.
IMO, Loomis and the current FO have done a pretty bad job of (a) addressing needs effectively, and (b) getting good value for the players we sign. We\'ve needed a LB, DT, S, CB almost every year over the last 5. While the team has signed some players at all of those positions - the players they\'ve signed haven\'t helped. Ruff, Ambrose, Craft, Sloan, Grady Jackson... there have just been too many second or third tier players that don\'t help the team. Likewise, when they do pay out big, it\'s to players like Tebucky Jones - who completely doesn\'t deserve it.

Loomis has always been considered a great numbers guy. But I question seriously this group\'s ability to evaluate talent and effectively address needs.

I just hope finally his third time around he get it right and draft a corner this year. They\'re plenty cb out there and if he don\'t draft one, i\'ll be again one of unsupportive critics

They have also made some good signings...

DE Charles Grant, Pro Bowl G LeCharles Bentley, DT Johnathan Sullivan and WR Donte\' Stallworth, and re-signed veterans such as WR Michael Lewis, TE Boo Williams and DE Willie Whitehead.(also..Buckwoldt, Smith, and Watson)

Not to mention this years outstanding FA period

Sullivan is inexcusable I will admit, we aren\'t the only one\'s who had him ranked high on the Draft Board..but..We gave up entirley too much for him at the same time..I won\'t try to make an excuse for that..

But..he has done right by the team..He is an active guy in F.A., and for the most part..does pretty well in the draft..he keeps us in a position to be able to move and adjust the Depth Chart according to whatever they may think they need at the time...

Alot of teams don\'t have that Luxury...

I\'m not trying to give him an A+...but a solid B is a fair assesment..We could be in a lot worse shape..

Sullivan was rated AT BEST the 5th best DT in the draft. Since we moved up to 6th, and one went ahead of him, well, you do the math. It sure as hell shocked the crap out of Kiper and everyone on the ESPN panel when we took him. I can still see Kiper rifling through papers to find a write up on Sullivan cause it was such a shock. What was given up to get him, that makes that pick inexcusable, no matter who else we have gotten.

I will applaud Loomis on his cap handling though. That\'s why I feel at least when he wants to trade a Howard, he knows money wise it will help the team. I wish he would find a way to incorporate bigger name FAs into our cap, but I can\'t argue with his handling of our cap situation.

On personnel, I give him a C-. The way I felt when we picked Sullivan is still fresh in my mind, especially since I had such hopes when we had two picks in the first, and cause Trufant and Williams were right there. Also, too many free agents haven\'t panned out or been of the caliber or positions we have needed. Moneywise, he gets an A-. So overall I guess a B-. Somehow I thought it would be worse if I really looked at it.

exactly why I said

I will never forget he was there, especially since he was rated HIGHER than Sully by far on all boards.

I never have understood that particular pick either...

They must have thought they saw something special in this kid...and if he doesn\'t step it up this year..He will likely be gone..We\'re never going to get what we payed for him...so, that\'s just a loss...

But, overall..The team is in good shape...especially, after this Off Season..we made some really good pick ups..and we still have Howard in our back pocket...

With the draft coming up in like 40 days...you can feel the anticipation building...there\'s a lot of things that can happen..and if the last few weeks mean anything..we could really be in position for an outstanding Off Season

By the way...Areany of you guys going to be on live chat during the Draft?

The Saints draft is a personal pain for me. I am not confident enough that we will draft well to share it openly with others yet. :weepy:

I think they have done a fair job so far. Sully was a bust but everyone else worked out well. I thought Will Smith was a great pick-up. I didn\'t understand the whole \"best player available\" deal until later. We really needed help in the secondary and they draft a DE when we already had two very talented ones. I don\'t regret their decision now, but I hope they don\'t do the same this year. We NEED a LB!!!!!!!!!!!!
