Haslett calling the shots?

Looking at what has happenend since the end of last season, I get the feeling something has changed. Since I'm not in the "loop" all I can do is speculate. But, there's little doubt in my mind that "someone" else is calling the shots.

Consider this:

1. Tebucky is cut.
2. McCarthy is gone.
3. New defensive coach.
4. Riley gone.
5. Dwight Smith signed in FA.
6. The Saints trying to sign a PROVEN LB.

Does that sound like the regime that we all know? Not to me.

Looking back, I think Haslett is the one most responsible for the changes.

Haslett changed the defense over the last4 games.

Haslett told Benson how the cow eats corn.

Haslett let it be known he didn't care for Mickey Loomis.

I really believe Haslett is putting his stamp on this team.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Haslett calling the shots?

I posted this before but :
Quote:

New Orleans Saints
Mickey Loomis: Executive vice president/general manager of FB operations
Rick Mueller: Director of player personnel
Jim Haslett: Head coach
Rick Reiprish: Director of college scouting

This is a somewhat strange offseason for the Saints\' front office. It anticipated turnover because of a coaching change and it didn\'t happen. As a result, there may be some strained relationships and questionable loyalties in the front office, but right now everybody seems to be able to rise above it.

Mickey Loomis runs the show and has final say on all personnel decisions, but he is more of a business guy and capologist than a film evaluator. However, he has a lot of faith in Mueller and their relationship goes back to their days together in Seattle. Mueller sets the draft board and oversees the entire scouting department and Loomis will take great input from him before making a final decision.

Veteran Rick Reiprish is the college scouting director and is probably overqualified for his job. He is capable of running the entire scouting department and has an excellent relationship with Mueller. He is very well organized and meticulous when it comes to draft preparation.

Russ Ball also assists Loomis with salary-cap issues, but he doesn\'t have a lot of say in football decisions.

The Saints have a solid group of scouts, but they don\'t have a lot of power. They can get in their opinion to Loomis, Mueller and Reiprish.

Jim Haslett has moderate input in personnel decisions, and while he seems to like evaluating players, he doesn\'t have as much power as in the past with a somewhat tentative coaching situation.

Free agency and draft decisions will be made more by the front office than the coaching staff. The Saints are fairly methodical in their personnel philosophy. They don\'t make a lot of radical moves but they count on their preparation to help them make intelligent decisions.

Haslett calling the shots?

Thanks whodi. I\'ve read that before. But, I still think \"something\" has changed.

My \"gut\" feeling is that Haslett has more control this year. Maybe not. But \"something\" is different.

Very good point Gumbo. I don\'t know, but do you guys think if Haz is running things now, is it good thing or a thing? It always bothered me that Haz used to be a defensive guy, but the team never seemed to take a really defensive approach. You may be right, but why would Haz keep Venturi around if he wanted a decent defense? Ofcourse, hiring the \"defensive assistant\" was kind of an odd move too. Maybe he dosen\'t believe in Venturi anymore.

Changes seem to be made that look like a step in the right direction. An article comes out saying that Haslett has less control and someone else is calling the shots.

Billy suggests that all that other stuff is BS and that it\'s really Haslett that\'s making the difference. Shocker.

Sure Billy, after having his team referred to as high schoolers by the owner mid-season, huge amounts of speculation about his job security, and a fourth straight average (underacheiving) season, Haslett marched right into Benson\'s office and told him exactly how things were gonna be around there. Benson, clearly a guy scared to take a stand (as witnessed by the negotiations with the state), bent to Haslett\'s will.

Lets not kid anyone here... the \"defensive assistant\" isn\'t an assistant. He doesn\'t answer to Venturi. This guy is in charge of the \"defensive game planning\".

Well .. what was reported was that Haslett told Benson he wasn\'t going to fire any of his assistants and if that\'s what Benson wanted then Haslett said he would resign or Benson could fire him.

Benson said what Haslett said really made quite an impression on him and that\'s why he decided to give Haslett a contract extension.

Now, that\'s what was reported. Some of you can specutlate. And that\'s all I\'m doing. I\'m just basing my opinion on what went down right after the season was over.
