all this talk of howard and joe.......

say what you want.....they are by far the best players on the team..........they play through injury and get the job done. let me repeat that, they play through injury and get the job done. period....... i give duece a thumbs up for trying...
but these are the guys you want on your team. these are the guys you can count on. these are the guys who have proved it again and again and again.........
i have a few really dumb questions.
what happens if will goes down with injury?
what happens if horn goes down with injury?
and my last one, not to do with the saints,
what happens if brady goes down with injury?......smitty

Answer to all 3 questions...I don\'t know...

Thats sort of scenario always comes into play, because it\'s likely...it happens every year..the Injury Bug will bite some team, and send them into turmoil....

Unfortunatley...the NFL is the one place where you can put all your eggs in one basket..and have it work great...it , of course , goes the other way too...

It will always be like that, It\'s just the nature of the game now...

What happens if Payton Manning goes down?..one of two things...either they(the team) sinks, or swims... sometimes an unlikely back up, steps in and dazzles..(Brady, Young, Brooks, Roethlisburger< the list is long...)

And that is why they play the Game...like Boomer says

Couldn\'t agree more Smitty. I posted the same thing in another thread and got blasted. Be prepared. Apparently people on this board believe that Joe Horn and Darren Howard have added absolutely nothing to this team over the last 5 years, aren\'t worth their salaries, and if we could only trade them we would some how magically sign Chad Johnson and Brian Urlacher and all of the Saints problems would be solved. It\'s ridiculous, but that\'s how these crazies feel. :)

i\'ll just have to quote the old song, of which i can\'t remember the title..........you don\'t know what you got til it\'s gone...
as for brady going down, i thought for sure someone would say, new england is gone........because it\'s true.........without brady, they are not nor would they have been 2 outta three superbowl winners......... he is a class act.........i\'d trade the whole offense for him and 1/2 the defense along with the next 5 yr picks........all of em.........smitty

What if is a big question that noboby can answer I mean what if my aunt had balls? I guess I would call her Uncle Lizzie instead of Aunt Lizzie. The salary cap is what keeps the NFL competitive and prevents big market teams from buying all of the best talent (ex. New York Yankees)

smity, notice that the patriots lost both their starting corners last year? they had an undrafted rookie starting in the superbowl. when was the last time you saw an elderly wide receiver decide to play nickel back to help the team out? winners, good organizations, survive and even excel in adversity. to show my elderliness i will recite an incident from 1966. the colts lost unitas and his backup to injury right at the end of the season. tom matte, their hb came in at to qb. he was one at michigan about 5-10 years before. they were limited to the plays they could fit onto his wristband. and that is when the qb called the plays himself. they pulled off some wins and were robbed of a championship by green bay who had a missed field goal called good. wild. exciting. don shula\'s first head coach gig.

will goes down, we will see how grant can perform with non stop double teams. see what game whitehead has on a regular basis. did bryant sign elsewhere yet? i think he has good game as a role player

horn goes down, we see if 2nd round henderson has matured and is an nfl player. gardner gets an opportunity that his cousin here promises he perform if given a shot.

brady? what\'s the matter? you ain\'t a rohan fan? LOL 75% of nfl teams are in a world of sh!t if their qb goes down. you think bouman isnt scary? how many people can even name peyton\'s backup?

i have no question of the performance of joe. he is a gamer despite the assinine mouth he sometimes spews. it may be my endless soapbox here but i must emphasize- yes, he is good. deuce is a stud. BUT AT WHAT PRICE? there is only $85 mil to spend on an entire roster. bentley is an young stud to go with. ditto grant. mackenzie wants a reworked deal and is worth it. worth it or not there are big bucks committed to brooks. teams can only dole out upper end money to a few players. ya better be prudent in who ya decide to do it with. contracts arent about what you did in the past but what you expect in the future. either manage your cap by choice or be beaten into submission ala the titans. this is about the brightest aspect of this administration to me. they may not have the gusto to go for the player who will push the team over the hump but loomey isnt ever gonna give a player a dime more than he can get by with.

We can\'t just re-sign everyone we like, as Kelley correctly pointed out. We simply cannot afford to pay Howard 8 mil. We can get 2-6 players for that amount. It is a luxury to have a superstar backup at DE. Sure you want guys like Bryant (who I believe re-signed with us) and Whitehead to be good, but to pay 8 mil for a guy who isn\'t going to be a certain starter?

I like Howard a lot, but his value to us GIVEN HOW MUCH HE\'LL COST is MUCH higher in a trade.

As for trading Joe, I think the jury is out on whether or not that is a good idea.

I realize that being a \"cap guy\" or being a \"stats guy\" is usually bandied about as a bit of an insult. However, I consider myself to be a bit of both. We cannot afford to keep Joe, Grant, Bentley, McKenzie, and McAllister for much longer if we pay Howard what he wants. Some of these guys, if we\'re going to keep them all, will have to play for less than what they may be worth if there were no cap (or they were on a team that had much more cap space). Re-signing Howard at 8 mil, would mean not being able to pay Joe, McAllister, and McKenzie THIS year. This means that they\'ll be free agents next year, instead of merely increasing their pay by 1 mil each and signing them for 3 years or something like that. It just isn\'t practical to keep Howard at this cost.

It isn\'t like we wouldn\'t want Howard on the roster. He is just too expensive AND we really need a linebacker. We cannot afford the LUXURY of Howard. I wish we could.
