Good news on Joe Horn!

This is taken off another Saints' message board. Sounds good to me!

Quote:

Was driving home from Baton Rouge and caught Joe on 870 with Kenny n Kaare. He said that he was ****** off yesterday but slept on it and had a change of heart. His agent and Micky are talking again and he said the talks were upbeat. Said he wanted to be there for Devrey, AB, Donte, Lewis, and the new guys.

He\'s not really a team player though...

That\'s right... Joe is out for only one guy... Joe. That is why he played for like 750,000 last year instead of holding out.

why cant we give him a fair base and let him gain so much of a bonus for 70 catches and more for 80 and the more for 90. and so on. also with td\'s.

i know that would depend on if he would accept it or not. but if you give him a fair base and then give him incentive to mkae more maybe he would take it. maybe pay him top 10 and then give him the chance to get top three money through production. just a thought.

Joe is scheduled to get paid 3.8 mil this year (and part of his original bonus is included in his cap number - bring it up to 4.5 or something close to that). This means that we could renegotiate with Joe to pay him 4.5 mil this year WITH NO CHANGE IN OUR CAP NUMBER. Of course, he\'ll want a bonus that will increase his cap number (probably at least 1.5 mil this year). However, there is no reason we can\'t pay him a good deal more, with LITTLE effect on our cap situation.

We\'re not totally screwed when it comes to Joe, so long as he doesn\'t go back (continue?) asking for top 5 money. It looks to me like top 10 is do-able with little cap harm.

Of course, the main problem is that Bentley, Grant, McAllister, and McKenzie are all also due for pay increases - that is where this all gets sticky.

Yea, those 15 yard unsportsmanlike look-at-me celebration stunts absolutely scream \"Team Player\" :poke:

Horn is entering the final year of a three-year contract extension he signed in 2003. The four-time Pro Bowler is scheduled to earn a $3.8 million base salary this season. The Saints would like to re-negotiate the deal to lower his $6.5 million salary cap figure.

Horn said he is even willing to include a clause in the deal that would return money to the team if his production doesn\'t merit his pay.

\"If they give me a contract that\'s equal to the top two or three guys in the league and I\'m not producing, then I would be willing to sign on the dotted line to give the money back to the organization,\" Horn said. \"I think that\'s fair.

\"I love New Orleans. I want to retire here. I want them to hang my jersey up in the Superdome one day. I don\'t want to play anywhere else. That\'s why I want to get a deal done. But I want to be paid what I feel I deserve.\"

I dont see anything wrong with that.

Giving the money back doesn\'t help the cap situation this year. It\'s not all about giving him what he feels he deserves.

The best move right NOW would be to move in another direction...at the very latest next year. When you have a used car you don\'t wait for it to break down before you trade it in and get a new car, do you?

How can you possibly argue with that? First, it was the guy isn\'t worth top 5 money, even though he\'s produced that way. Then it was, he\'s a me first selfish guy who isn\'t a team player.

Now you\'ve got the guy saying that is he doesn\'t produce like a top 5, he\'ll give money back!!!! Show me two other players in the ENTIRE LEAGUE who have made statements like that... and why does Horn want this?? B/c he loves New Orleans and wants to make sure he gets into camp for his teammates. Bastard! We should just kill him.

It\'s not as good of a deal as it sounds. I think it\'s noble of him to propose such a contract, but all it will take is a high ankle sprain for him to change his mind. Like I said before, if he bombs out next year, giving back the money won\'t help us with the cap situation. I would say nay on this deal. If Joe is so certain on his talents, he should sign an incentive-based contract.

I agree with Golden Tomb on this: even if Joe gives the money back, it will hurt our cap position.

I\'d like us to re-sign Horn. I\'d like to see him sign the 6 year deal they\'ve been talking about. This will lower our cap space THIS YEAR (although, I\'m not sure what we need it for anymore, now that most of the FAs I like have been signed - maybe they can still get Dyson). Also, the one I saw earlier would give us good cap room next year. We\'d be paying roughly 2 mil for our #1 guy - not too shabby.

I\'m certainly not against alternatives, but (sorry Whodi) as usual it will depend on what we can get as an alternative. I don\'t think we\'ll be getting a 1st (and Mike Williams) for Horn - we can\'t even get a 2nd for Howard.

Why is it sorry Whodi? It seems you have yet to read that entire thread to see what we would be offering plus Joe to get a high enough pick for Williams, so it doesn\'t bother me if you shoot it down. You still haven\'t looked at all the facts presented. :P
