Could it have been better? Yes, but only if the Patriots were willing to make it better, which they obviously weren't. Besides, what difference does it make to the Saints what happens to the pick they moved as part of the deal? It certainly makes no difference whatsoever in my mind.
I'm not so sure that the Saints got all they could for Cooks, when they still had a month, or so, before the draft. This seemed like an awful quick trigger on a not so good deal.

It doesn't speak well of our front office when they get fleeced on deals while other teams are making out on their deals. The Titans, whether or not they ever win again, have gotten huge value in trade deals the last couple of years. It seems to me that if you stand your ground long enough, teams will crack, if they really want a player or draft pick bad enough. The Saints have a propensity to cave in on contract demands and trades. Not every time (I liked what they did on the first day of free agency a lot, aside from Ginn, who I am indifferent about), but far too often. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: These guys keep getting free passes because of that Superbowl. That was an awesome accomplishment. But I think there would be a lot more wide spread criticism for how things have played out since then, if not for that championship.

At least they did make a couple of nice moves the other day, including finally getting some guard help.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.

When you let players under contract to dictate a trade you're bound to be short change. If he wanted out so bad I would've at least asked him to move back that roster payment or I would've threatened to trade him to the Browns. I don't understand why they didn't reach out to the Browns in the first place

If the Saints were so badly fleeced why did none of the other 30 teams offer a better trade

From all the reports the Titans were not giving up pick 18 unless they got our round 2

The Eagles offered Jenkins and a 3+4 and preferred to buy players on one year deal

The Browns have every draft pick under the sun and no WR yet no reports of an offer

Teams were not knocking down the door for Cook so they took the best offer on the table which is his worth

We got a 1st and 3rd rounder for Cooks and a no good 4th to the Patriots. It's a win win. We screwed the Patriots in the deal, which never happens and we got 2 great draft picks to improve our defense. With AJ in the fold and Nick resigning we've already got the makings of a lot better defense. Byrd out of the way, resign Sterling and get a vet CB in here. Trade the 3rd back to the Patriots for Butler and draft the top 2 DE's in the first round, cornerback in the second and QB Davis Webb in the 4th!

If the saints were smart the would ask for the 4th back with butler and give them our rd 3. They would be dropping a high contract (which they will drop anyway)and regaining a draft pick

It was the only way to make the deal. I'm sure they would have rather not done it, but it was necessary. You can't logically blame them. The market sets the price and obviously no one else would offer any better. A player is only worth what the market bears. That is simple economics. The worth that you or I see is irrelevant.

First of all, they were facing a deadline of Cooks' roster bonus, $781,599, which would have taken affect today. Now New England is responsible for it.

Secondly, they didn't get fleeced. They got what the market would bear. Cooks is going to be demanding a huge contract soon and his importance to the Saints offense wasn't worth it. No team other than the Patriots were willing to deal with that factor. The Saints got an additional first rounder with a fifth year option and moved up at least 15 spots from the 4th to the 3rd.

How do you know they didn't?

Don't forget that those reports of supposed offers were based solely upon speculation. There is no way to know what was really said between the two sides.
