Competition brewing for Saints' long-snapping job

1 Attachment(s)
A competition is brewing at one of the specialty roles on the New Orleans Saints roster.

New Orleans did not re-sign Justin Drescher after his contract expired at the end of the 2016 season, leaving a space wide open for another snapper to take over the role Drescher's handled for the past seven seasons.

The Saints signed Utah's Chase Dominguez as an undrafted free agent, adding him to a group that already includes offseason signing Jesse Schmitt and second-year tight end Garrett Griffin, who also plays offense.

"(Schmitt)’s one right now, and we’ll look to sign one after the draft probably," Saints coach Sean Payton said after the draft on Saturday.

I get that this is an "art", but it always kills me that we give up a $600,000 roster spot on someone who rarely does anything else.

Or how about the fact they cannot be touched? OUr centers used to get their heads shoved in their (crotch)...

Then again the NFL must allow Saints Long Snappers to be touched, grabbed, or held down...or did that not happen last year? [sic]

Obviously good snaps are the top responsibility, but it would be quite nice if the LS was good enough to be a solid backup TE/OL as well. One more roster spot to work with, which could be huge.

How can a center snap the shot gun and not have the ability to long snap? Have the punter cover one side and the center the other as a last resort if you don't want him to get injured.

If a long snapper messes up you are screwed! Drew is chasing the ball over his head and only bad things can happen. He was worth every dime. I loved Drescher and have plenty of his signatures. I enjoyed talking with him each year at training camp because he really cared about the fans. I hope the replacement is equally effective. Thanks for the service to Justin Drescher I did not know until now.

Not following you RSII... why would Drew be chasing the ball?

I think the point we are making is that your starting center used to be a long snapper, or backup lineman. Now teams have to use a roster spot on someone who is very specialized, and usually doesn't play anything but ST on the kicking side. Drescher, for example, was not on the return teams.

Most can do it decently well. But decent isn't good enough in the NFL and that is why you have a specialist to do it.
