Adrian Peterson on joining Saints offense: 'What will the opposing team do?'

1 Attachment(s)
NFL defenses accustomed to loading the box with eight defenders against running back Adrian Peterson have a dilemma against the New Orleans Saints in 2017.

Opponents can continue to key on Peterson, but doing so only opens the door for one of the league's top passing attacks led by quarterback Drew Brees.

And as defenses will soon discover, it's an ideal pick-your-poison situation for Peterson, who clearly did his homework before deciding to sign a two-year deal with the Saints.

"Oh, man, that was something that was intriguing to me," Peterson said Tuesday in a teleconference. "Just being in the backfield with Drew Brees and a great offensive line that finished ranked No. 2 overall as a group and No. 3 in some polls and No. 2, as well as No. 2 in scoring.

"For rushing the ball, they ended up No. 2 and pass blocking, No. 9, and then you look at the young guys they have out wide, as well, it's a potent offense. That's something that's been shown for years now. So, me envisioning myself being behind Drew Brees, it was just like, 'Wow. What will the opposing team do?'"

I think we need to listen to what AD is saying. He accepts any challenge of course but he feels he is at his best when the box isn't stacked with defenders. Sounds like a 4 WR spread with Brees under center and AD in the backfield might be a good formation to mix in.

Part of the story last year with AD's extremely low yards per carry was the situation in Minnesota. You had Shaun Hill starting week 1 and then Sam Bradford from week 2 on but Sam was brand-new to the Vikings system. Because of that situation, defenses filled the box and dared Sam to beat them, and indeed Sam lit up defenses with the passing game in those early weeks. I guess what I am saying is, the Vikings OL and AD didn't perform as horribly as the stats made it look.

I personally would rather see them use more split back formations.

LB's would have to cover and focus on seperate RB's instead of one solely in the back field.

Will AP be used as a TE?

This could work. If we are passing, Ingram and AP are both capable in pass protection. Then you could have one or the other run a checkdown route. And if the defense isn't on top of their gap assignments, could also break some nice runs.

The only thing the other team can do is to try to score more. C'mon defense!!!

AP with Fleener and Houman at TE's should get us more third down conversions. Don't sleep on Houman. He's better than Hill in my opinion.

He has never really developed as a good blocker or receiver so I doubt it. Also there's the whole why in the hell would you make a HOF RB a TE at the end of his career.
