****! ****! This damn team... I'm so tired of this injury crap.

What the hell kind of foot injury will take 4-6 months to heal?! Is this where Jack Allen steps in and becomes our next undrafted superstar?

With that time span it might be something like a Lisfranc injury.

Seems like it'll be the first few games if any at all.

Sounds like he may start out on the PUP list and miss the first 6.

Probably on a plane to NO this morning. We are in early May so there is plenty of time to get the "next man" up to speed.

Totally sucks for Unger though.

Five months, this is May, that puts us into early October...

It sucks but I'm not too worried. Plenty of time to get on top of this. Mangold is out there. Not sure about Jack Allen. Maybe he could be a stud.

Regardless, we've got time to figure this out. I'd rather it happen now then in TC or Preseason.

+1. Wonder why the Saints medical staff waited this late for a decision (surgery) to be made?

Exactly. Even if he doesn't miss any games, he's not going to be in shape. We'll need someone to spell him regardless. It doesn't matter anyway because we can't go into the season just hoping that he'll be able to return early. So...gotta sign someone.

And just wait til Armstead's knee flares up like it does every year because for some reason he's had a knee injury for 4 years.

This is where Lelito would have come in handy as Ungers backup. He played better at C than G.

Re: And so it begins.... Max Unger out

From BleacherReport....

The center market in 2017 wasn't especially robust to begin with. After a couple of days of a weak class being picked over, the best shot NFL teams have at upgrading at the position is probably in the 2017 NFL draft.

1. Nick Mangold: If there's a quality starter left in the free-agent market, it's likely Mangold, whom the New York Jets let go after his injury-marred 2016 campaign. However, the former first-round pick is also a seven-time Pro Bowler who was at one time arguably the best in the business.

2. Brian Schwenke: The 25-year-old Schwenke started 28 games for the Tennessee Titans over the last four years. He was squeezed out in Nashville, but a change of scenery could be all the young center needs to take the next step.

3. Ryan Wendell: In 2012, PFF graded Wendell as the best center in the AFC while he was with the Patriots. That was a while back, and he wasn't as good in 2013 or 2014 and barely played due to injury in 2015 and 2016. Someone will give him a chance to try to recapture past glories.

4. Joe Hawley: The 28-year-old isn't a great center. Or even an especially good one. He is, however, hard-nosed and has started 52 games over the past six seasons with the Buccaneers and Falcons.

For a rent-a-player signing I'd take any of these 3, but not Wendell. Maybe these guys don't grade out as A plusses, but being a starter in this league does mean something.

Saints will look at Senio Kelemete and Cameron Tom before bringing in Nick Mangold...

Mangold's agent will likely start to build a market with Saints division, conference rivals...

Unger out and Stephone Anthony starting over, cue the talking heads on the Jimmy Graham trade...

Unger injured his foot. It’s too early to know if he’ll miss start of season, but his availability is in question

— Nick Underhill (@nick_underhill) May 8, 2017

Source confirms #Saints C Max Unger suffered foot injury, though said it's too early to determine if he'll miss start of season. Tough blow. https://t.co/rBkkOBqp6a

Maybe Brian De La Puente would be able to fill in. I know he hasn't played in over a year and is maybe retired so this may be a silly idea. But bringing someone in who knows our system at that position for multiple years is not so silly.

Why would Mangold sign with us and go through the rigors of training camp knowing full well he'll be benched when Unger's ready?

And trading Ingram for a temporary replacement center?! Our running game already takes a hit without Unger so why make it worse getting rid of our best RB?

That is the million dollar question.
I get wanting to avoid surgery, but he hurt it early December and has had 5 months to heal on its own. Don't you pull the trigger in March, not May?
