Cameron Jordan: Adrian Peterson looks faster than when Saints last faced him in 2011

The hype surrounding Adrian Peterson has been pouring out of the New Orleans Saints locker room.

Peterson's teammates have lauded the former All-Pro running back's performance through the first two weeks of organized team activities. He's a beast, said Kenny Vaccaro. A stud, according to Drew Brees. Terron Armstead has never seen anybody like him.

Add Saints star defensive end Cameron Jordan to list of players impressed by the 32-year-old thus far.

"He looks phenomenal. He looks great. He's making cuts that," Jordan said Monday before thinking about the last time he saw Peterson.

It was all the way back in 2011 because Peterson missed the last Saints-Vikings matchup in 2014 while effectively suspended due to his child abuse case.

Jordan was a rookie in that 2011 game, and Peterson had just 10 carries for 60 yards after missing the previous three games with a high ankle sprain, but one of those runs went for 39 yards.

"He probably looks faster," Jordan said of Peterson now.

Seriously?

"If you can reverse Father Time, maybe he knows him," Jordan said at a bowling event with Special Olympics Louisiana athletes. "I don't know, but either way, I'm going to be getting real familiar with A.P. to understand how can I move as he does as the age that he is."

The Saints signed Peterson to a two-year deal in April hoping he could bounce back well after playing just three games for the Minnesota Vikings last year. With Peterson and Mark Ingram providing run support to Drew Brees, the Saints offense could be more balanced in 2017.

Since I am in South Dakota which is most definitely Vikings territory, the Vikings are on the TV or in the media a lot more here. I have definitely seen a lot of AP through all the up's and down's in Minnesota. Fun fact - back when we did the B&G draft way back when, I role-played the Vikings and correctly picked the Vikings would take AP.

My daughter is a Vikings fan and her reaction to me on the AP signing was "well good luck with that, he sucks". So I have to balance things like that with the hype coming out of NOLA about AP lately.

AP was not as bad as the stats would indicate last year. The Vikings O-line had a rough time with injuries and getting different players acclimated. Sam Bradford was also brand new to the team. The Vikings opponents opted to stack the box and make Bradford beat them when AP was in the backfield last year before the injury. As a result of these factors, AP's yard per carry was insanely low and the passing game did wonderfully as Bradford did a really good job on the fly.

Two things worry me about AP - rhythm and fumbles. If AP has nagging injuries that force him to miss practice or limit him greatly in practice, gameday becomes more worrisome. Because when he is rusty and not in rhythm that is when he fumbles the most and his worst production comes out. If he can avoid the injuries and the reps start piling up, he will bust loose for some big plays and big games, it is just a matter of time.

We will also have to see if Payton has the touch to manage AP's touches and uses him properly. It takes the right approach to handle AP properly and get him going. Some Vikings OC's have done it well, while others have done it horribly. And it's not simply about the quality of the offensive mind either - AP and Norv weren't a good fit. If AP works out excellently here and shows his old form, it will be because Sean and AP have both done a good job of adapting him to the offense. It won't happen by accident.

So what I'm saying is there are a lot of "if's to the AP signing. But if we figure them out and things go right with AP's health, the upside is we could really terrorize offenses like never before in the Sean/Drew era. Considering AP's contract, it's not a bad gamble.

Sioux Falls, the other side of the state. I was born in Houston and we moved up here when I was 3 ... so I'm kind of the opposite and moved away from the NFL LOL.

Neugey, I think you're approaching this as AP being our premier player. He's not gonna be that. He'll be working with a limited amount of carries per game and no real chance to establish that running back "rhythm" that run heavy teams offer. He'll be expected to actually catch a ball thrown by very good thrower, distract the defense from what's really happening and block as well. Much different than how he's been used in the past. The Vikes put a lot of the game on his shoulders, it won't be that way here. Sean's not going to change his spots just because he has a very, very nice new coat.
