Is Brees Moving Toward Free Agency?

Last year, as Brees was entering the final year of his contract, he signed a one-year extension. Which now puts him in the same place he was a year ago — one season removed from free agency. This time around, however, there is no discussion about an extension.

Brees has stated that he plans to continue with year to year contracts until he retires. He is already guaranteed $18 million in 2018 with a $6 million signing bonus. If he doesn't decide to retire, they can extend another year, same terms. This can go on until he decides to retire in five or so years.

Is that 24 mil against the cap?

Yes, unless they extend creatively again. The more you can push back the better. The way the cap is skyrocketing it makes sense to push cap back to where it is a smaller percentage of the total. That's actually a bargain given the latest trends, especially for one of the two or three best QB's in the league.

He doesn't need to do it until next season.

My point exactly. Here we are with another waste of time article...

If the team doesn't get turned around Drew has the ability to look at his options. He wants and deserves another Lombardi.

Of course he wants another Lombardi. And he wants it with the Saints. There is no guarantee going anywhere else would give him any better shot at winning it all. 7-9 may technically be a losing record, but it is only a few plays away from being 10-6 and having a shot at the title. Brees knows the team is moving in the right direction. He isn't an idiot. His BEST chance at another Lombardi is in New Orleans.

Brees has done a great job for us but if he left after this season it maybe a good move for us? We'll see. We need a replacement now and like I said I think he's already on the roster.

I swear PFT posts this article every year. "With four years left on his contract Brees quietly moves toward free agency..."

If he can keep playing at this level for 4 or 5 years why get rid of him? No replacement will be close. And who is on the roster that can replace him at the same or better level?

Yep. If he doesn't see overall team improvement this year he will leave.
