Click bait. Brees will simply do another contract just like this one at a higher annual salary.

With the cap currently at $167 million this year and likely to be $175 million or more come next year, a cap hit north of $20 million really isn't that big a deal.

For some reason none of the national media wants to believe that Brees wants to retire a Saint. He's had the opportunity to go for the gold. Instead he worked out a fair deal that got him paid and still left the team enough flexibility to build what's looking like a winning roster around him.

Next time up isn't the first, second, or even third rodeo for Brees.

So like I said... Click bait.

So hard to get a QB these days. Either way, we have been very fortunate. Enjoy the rest of the ride folks.

Well we have a young nucleus who haven't been paid yet, so it won't be an issue until then. I don't see Drew going anywhere, regardless.

It would help if Terron Armstead could ever get, and stay, healthy considering he HAS been paid, so that we don't have to go tackle shopping. People say we have Ramczyk, but he's still unproven and would leave a hole a right tackle for the future if he has to play left.

The comments on that article are sickening. Drew is the heart and soul of this team. Anything less is absolute BS.

It'll be funny when he retires and we're back to a mediocre QB. The same people will complain about how terrible he is. Spoiled fans. Of course we get an Aaron Rodgers waiting in the wings. I wouldn't sleep on that.

Another losing season and he's gone. I'd put money on it.

The next 1 to 2 year contract Brees signs will probably be in the neighborhood of 28-30 mil per year, with all of it guaranteed.

Usually when a player gets this kind of money, I roll my eyes. But Stafford has carried the Lions on his back for a few years now, he's been impressive.

I really don't expect another losing season, but if it does happen he's only gone if he retires and I don't see that happening because he wants all of the passing records. I'll take your money ($50?) and say that he doesn't go to another team. As easy as that money would be, I hope we do not get a chance to see for several more years to come.

I have seen early estimates putting the 2018 cap over the $180 million level.

I don't see how Drew Brees would be allowed to walk away without a clear plan B waiting...

He wouldn't be. Plus, he has stated on numerous occasions that 1) he wants to play one year at a time from here on out, 2) he plans to play well into his forties, and 3) he doesn't plan to play anywhere but New Orleans.

Matt Stafford, what in the name of all holy hell makes him worth that kind of money.

He's a starting NFL QB. It's as simple as that. In two years that will be less than average for the position.

FIFY

Guido is right on target. There are about 12-15 players that can effectively play the NFL QB position. With increasing salary caps and required spending minimums, it's a no brainer to spend the money when an organization has one of the 12. Those that don't keep drafting hoping to find one. And when they get one (Winston and Mariotta for example), when their turn comes up, they'll get the money too.

Only Washington has avoided making the committment. But they are being dumb. They could have locked Cousins up at $24 million/year for a while. But they've paid him $45 million for two years, and will have to pay him $35 million next year to franchise him again. And he'll still get to walk and get a $30 million average from Washington or someone else afterwards.

That's why the contracts are so huge. There are 15-20 teams out there that would love to make a free agent splash by bringing in a top level starting QB.

Cleveland has started nearly 20 different QBs since Stafford was drafted into the league. When you have a franchise QB, do whatever it takes to keep him.

Has he won anything. Like a Super Bowl. This craziness they're just driving up the price up to resign a great QB like Drew. I'm sorry i just don't see it in Stafford.

I'm not so sure that estimate is believable.
The NFL is trending downwards. With Goodell trying to be the all-powerful commissioner, concussions and lawsuits, and now players disrespecting the USA's flag and national anthem, the league is about to hit it's ceiling.
For me, when Goodell killed the Saints with the "Bounty" allegations my interest in the NFL waned severely.

Not only that, it's economics 101. What goes up most go down.

Looks like Drew's in for a raise next season. As long as it's not a long term deal, the Saints are still getting a great deal.

That's insane money for an above average passer, but Tom Condon will turn it into a death sentence for this team...

The NFL is only a meritocracy to a certain degree. The rest is a business. A $14 billion a year business. And it's a business where over 40% of that income must be paid in player salaries due to collective bargaining. In round numbers that's $3.5 million per player on the 32 53 man squads. Note that rookie contract, UDFA, and vet minimum players make much less than that.

As I stated above, NFL teams also have a rolling minimum spending average that they must meet.

Literally the money must be spent somewhere. And like it or not, each starting NFL QB is the media face of the franchise.

The system is working. According to:NFL will reach $14 billion in 2017 revenue – ProFootballTalk revenue is up to $14 billion in 2017 from $8 billion in 2010, a 75% increase in revenue in only 7 years.

So while the money is both insane and real, to organizations it's really Monopoly money as in a lot of ways it's not dollar coming directly from the owner's pockets.

BTW the franchise QB system works. Since 2000 I believe there were only two journeymen QBs that won a SB title (Dilfer in 2000, Johnson in 2003). There's no shot at winning it all without one.

So that's why the money follows the face.

When they do, we'll be a 7-9, 9-7, 8-8 team with a 5000 PaYd Season Quarterback...

So that will be that as no team has won a Championship in the CBA era with a QB taking over 12% of the salary cap...

Drew is going to get paid. I hate to say it, maybe just maybe not by the Saints.

Stafford can't carry Drew jock strap. What is Detriot thinking.
