8 takeaways from the Saints' 2017 first four games

Quote:

1. Turnover toughness

The New Orleans Saints are a top-five team in the NFL in turnover ratio. This isn’t a dream.

New Orleans and New England rank fifth at plus-4. Kansas City sits fourth at plus-5. Jacksonville and Buffalo (seriously?) are tied for second at plus-6, while Detroit leads the league at plus-9.

Here’s a wild stat from First-and-10 stats guru Gene Guillot: There have been 27 times in NFL history when a team has gone exactly four games without a turnover. The 2017 Saints are the third to not have a winning record during the four-game span (1998 Bengals and 2015 49ers).

4. The blitz is working

It sure seems like the Saints are the most blitz-happy team in the NFL. Sean Payton, Dennis Allen and Co. should be increasingly pleased at the results.

Passers are a combined 27 of 40 for 347 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. The Saints have also picked up six of their 11 sacks when rushing more than four defenders. And opposing quarterbacks have a 71.56 passer rating when the Saints blitz.

Gutsy, exciting.

5. Young corners come to play
Don’t start handing out islands to Marshon Lattimore and Ken Crawley quite yet. The two young Saints cornerbacks might be worthy of at least a peninsula, though.
Crawley, an undrafted rookie in 2016, more than looks the part as a viable NFL cornerback. He endured growing pains last season, but he’s learned from them.
Crawley’s interception off Jay Cutler thwarted a potential TD for the Dolphins. The second-year defender proved his great play in Carolina wasn’t a fluke.
Lattimore was one of the few bright spots during Week 2’s loss to New England. The 2017 first-round pick recovered from his concussion (missed Week 3) to continue his swarming play against Miami.

3. Cam Jordan on pace for Pro Bowl season

But isn't this the norm for Cam every year??

Our D would be very exciting to watch if we gave Cam some help on the opposite side.

Year after year he delivers, we need a Cam clone on the opposite side.

Most of the teams in the NFL could say the same thing. There just aren't many to go around.

If I remember right, these are two major components that got us to the Superbowl, blitzing quarterbacks, ending careers, and our defense consistently robbing the opponents of the ball.

I haven't ever witnessed a group of fans getting so giddy at the prospect of actually, finally, getting over .500.

SP and ML should start a cult.

Add to that, the offense will be better without having to work AP in.
