fox team report

Quote:

DRAFT WHISPERS: The club is trying to deal RE Darren Howard for a high draft pick. If it can, it would have an extra pick to use on the defense and more ammunition for a possible draft-day trade. The Saints are poised to make an aggressive move to get their top target. G.M. Mickey Loomis did a good job of filling the team's primary offseason needs in the free-agent market, signing RT Jermane Mayberry and FS Dwight Smith. The Saints failed to land a linebacker, however, and that might indicate the direction the club will lean in the first round.
TARGETING: The Saints' top priority is a playmaker who can improve the back seven of their defense. They like the depth and talent of the line. An impact linebacker is preferred, but there's a thin group of prospects at the elite level, so the Saints might have to nab an impact cornerback or safety at the No. 16 spot and take a linebacker in the second round. S Thomas Davis (Georgia) or CB Antrel Rolle (Miami) would be a perfect fit if either falls to No. 16. Georgia ILB Odell Thurman is an ideal candidate in the second round. The main priority on offense is a tackle. The Saints place a premium on run blocking and power on their offensive line. Players with finesse labels are downgraded. On the second day, the Saints want to select a developmental quarterback and have expressed interest in Auburn's Jason Campbell, Georgia's David Greene and former Florida State standout Adrian McPherson. Other late-round possibilities are a receiver, especially one with the size to play the slot, and a running back. The team recently signed RB Antowain Smith to back up Deuce McAllister but also could use a younger back.
interesting-who could they be targeting? I think they are looking to trade up to ge Derrick Johnson....

I kinda hope they don't though-i'm thinking davis and a top lineback ie> burnett, ruud, croweder or thurman could possible fill multiple holes rather than just one-but you could get an elite linebacker with DJ...

I don't think that cambell or Macpherson will be there after round three--so I don't think we'll get them. But I think Greene could be a really , really good addition to our team. at worst he will be a good backup, at best he will push brooks....
and the scouts love him...but either of the three have their pros and cons.

yup, why mention campbell or macpherson if you are talking 2nd day. greene maybe not even available then. he could be though. i\'ve never been impressed by his skills but ya cannot deny the strong intangibles.

A quality backup if not real competition is needed behind AB. If Brooks goes down for a sustained period this year with Bouman as da man then we could be in the Matt Leinart sweepstakes this time next year.

I think that le flors is more likely-and from what i\'ve read-not seen--if he weree 4 inches taller he\'d be the first pick in the draft (kiper, mortenson)....

another and one I\'d really like to get is fitzgerald.

Hey-if he lives up to his name and plays like the other vincent jackson who was in the NFL...he would be a steal.

From what I saw at the combine, he seemed the most comfortable receiver during drills, especially the pass catching drills. He stood out to me, with how fluid he was.

Roddy White. I hope he somehow falls into the 3rd, although I highly doubt it.

I\'ve also heard some good things about that receiver from Purdue, although I have forgotten his name. Taylor Stubblefield maybe? But definitely 5th round or lower for him. He is only 5\'11:.

don\'t forget about bragg from UCLA, I think..I heard an interview with him the other night, pretty impressive. there are quite a few receivers that could end up having better careers than some of the guys taken in the first.

btw from fred gibsons chat:

Jeremy Atlanta, GA: Who\'s the best db you faced in college?

Fred Gibson: (12:09 PM ET ) Carlos Rogers from Auburn. Carlos is a good frind of mine also. He\'s the only guy that I really thought was good that I ever played against.

interesting...cause he played several of the bigger name cbs.
