Defensive coaching

I think it is very noticeable how well the defense adjusts once they get in there and lose a couple battles. After the first series or two It seems like several times this season I found myself saying “looks like it’s going to be a long day for the defense” only for them to turn around and for the most part fix the problem. Haven’t seen this in the Payton era.
Offense does the same at times but Payton still sometimes forces things that aren’t working. I usually feel pretty good coming out of half time as I see a lot of adjustments.
Our coaching changes are evident and I think Payton is growing as a coach.

Re: Defensive coaching

I think the infusion of new coaches was invigorating for Coach Payton. I also get a feeling that Vitt and them good ole' boys were a bunch of yes men while the new crew holds him accountable in sorts.

I think the divorce is over and he can concentrate on his job and legacy now.

I’ll bet there’s truth in that statement.

Re: Defensive coaching

He seems to be lettting them do there jobs for a change with less micromanaging. This is what excites me as much as the team winning. Payton an old dog is learning new tricks. That’s how successful coaches last. As time goes on and Brees moves on he can’t just keep calling the same old plays because it used to work for him. He may not get another Brees. We may have to become more of a run team with a Qb that playes smart football and a stout defense.
It’s the coaches job to get the best out of the players you have.

Yeah, but after 4 consecutive penalties, or 5 straight blown coverages, can you blame him for going off on his DC's?
Ryan was so bad.
Have no idea how his teams ever won a game

I agree tho- after the first Carolina drive I thought it was going to be a 42-38 game

Re: Defensive coaching

Definitely much better defensive coaching this year over what we've seen in the past several years.

The thought he finally has some guys that can actually do their jobs crosses my mind.

Re: Defensive coaching

Not for nothing.
Someone got into Ken Crawley's ear.
After many whiffs and poor effort at tackling this season?

Panthers were down by 14 with 11:22 left in the 4th qtr.
4th down and 6 at the Saints 12.

Scam hits Funchess with a 5 yd pass.
Crawley crashes and stuffs it for a turnover on downs.

Yuge Play!

Re: Defensive coaching

Crawley play this year must have him as ine of biggest jumps a player has made in years. Looks a totally different player.
