Drew Brees is staring down his last best shot

"There's still things I feel like we're leaving out there," Brees continued, "opportunities that we're leaving out there, that if we want to accomplish and go where we want to go, then we've got to continue to improve upon and get better at those things. But when you can walk away from games saying that and yet you still won, that's a good thing."

Especially when this was considered a potential last-dance season for Payton and Brees, who were coming off three consecutive losing years. Payton is protected some by his considerable contract, and Brees by his made-man standing and scoreboard-tilting stats, but their marriage wasn't about to survive a fourth straight 7-9 year.

This is dumb as ****. I think he'll have several, maybe even better, shots in the coming years.

I thought so to after the 2009 season.

Marino thought the same after his rookie season!

But this roster is filled with very young talented players with more to be added.

This year is his next best shot, not his last best shot.

Our improved defense and dominant run game probably gave him 2 or 3 more shots with this team.

He ain't dead yet!

Re: Drew Brees is staring down his last best shot

huh?
I'm thinking next year this team should be even better to make a Super Bowl run. We have a legit defense, even with lots of new faces, and they'll only be better next year. And the offense, are you kidding me? We have a running game. A running game that opens up the passing game. A passing game with a Hall of Fame QB that can still get it done at a high level. And we don't even have a frikin TE.

To me, this year was a fluke of talent that came together sooner than expected. This team is no where close to peaking yet.
Remember the 2006 season? We knew we had something special brewing, but we didn't bring Lombardi home until the 2009 season. We might be one & done in the playoffs this year, but that certainly won't be the expectation next year.

Re: Drew Brees is staring down his last best shot

Brees has one more season left. Or at least as a top tier Qb anyway. Face the facts, he’s lost a step. Luckily we’ve tapped into some players to take the burden off of him so he doesn’t have to carry the team. If it weren’t for our running game and defense stepping up I think it would really take a toll on him. We may be able to get a couple more years out of him if our defense gets better and he gets a little more protection. He can make it as a smart game manager if he has to but the days of him airing it out to save the day are numbered.
