SAINTS AGREE TO TERMS WITH CB JIMMY WILLIAMS
April 18, 2005, New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with veteran CB Jimmy Williams; it was announced today by General Manager/Executive Vice President Mickey Loomis.

Williams, 5-11, 190 pounds, was originally drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the sixth round (196 overall) of the 2001 NFL Draft. He signed as a free agent with the San Francisco 49ers on Oct. 16, 2001 and spent the last four seasons on the 49ers active roster. In 2004, he played in 12 games with six starts, and recorded 47 tackles and one sack.

In 50 career games, Williams posted 87 tackles (74 solo), one sack, one interception and five passes defensed. He has also contributed on special teams as he led the NFL in punt return average (16.8) in 2002.

Wow. ;)

Anyone think we\'re tying to make it look like we\'re not going to take a CB in the draft?

they\'re only one corner worth our 1st rd draft \"Carlos Rogers\" If he is not available Thomas Davis or Marcus Spear will be my choice

Maybe we\'re looking to make the Beerman a starting WR, and we\'re looking for a kick returner?

well i think we still need to draft a corner. second or third round. i dont want a patch up crew back there again this year. im starting to like the sound of us drafting davis out of georgia. he looks good as a lb for us. anyone else agree?

Yeah, because it doesn\'t look like they are goning to trade Howard before the draft or trade up Davis is looking like our best option. I don\'t see the point in signing Williams. I think that we have enough vetern leadership in our secondary. We need some young blood in our secondary (esp. at CB) we need to draft one this year since they say that CB\'s is a 3 round deep position. The last CB we drafted was Craver if i am not mistaken and he was doing pretty good until he got hurt.

i do not want to draft Thomas Davis. I said it. I think he will be the bust of the draft. Down the road, he may develop, but in year one, he will do nothing.
Why? I have read from several sources that he is a flat out liability in the passing game, kind of like Tesucky.
Why not move him to LB? Are we really going to use a first round pick on a player that hasn\'t played LB in two years and expect him to start in the NFL?
He may be a very good player in a couple of years, but this year and next he will have to develope and will not be capable of starting. I personally don\'t want to waste a first round pick on a player that will not contribute.
I would much rather draft Jammal Brown or Carlos Rodgers.
But that is just me.

I would love to have Rogers but we are talking about our FO. Tay Tay, you might be right. Haslett did say that whoever they drafted first would be someone who would come in and contribute right away but I just don\'t understand why we are signing so many of these trash players to one year contracts (Smith, Williams, and probaby Fisher) when we could draft players of their caliber in the middle to late rounds. I don\'t see them drafting an OL in the first because I don\'t think any of them will be able to come in and start unless someone gets hurt or released at that positon. I think that they will draft an OT in the 3rd or 4th round where the sleeper picks are located.

I read that one of our new defensive coaches coached him in SF. Maybe he knows something we don\'t. I think he\'s just a younger replacement for AA. 4th CB.

About Davis, I think that if we keep our #16 pick, TD would be a really good pick. I believe he has way too much athleticism and football savvy to be a bust. Seems like an electrifying player.

I guess Davis and a CB should be the first two picks. I considered Travis johnson, but I\'m sure sure he has enough starting experience.

I do know that we\'ll need young, speedy sure tacklers, or we\'ll be chasing Vick around like a Benny Hill skit. I think Vick is the key to the whole division.

Correction: I\'d like DJ & a corner first. I was watching the news while typing ;)

I think we got Williams cause there are trade rumors involving Fred Thomas and Cleveland. They just lost Anthony Henry to Dallas. Doesn\'t mean we won\'t draft a corner, just that there is someone to take Fred\'s spoy in case he is traded, and while the rookie develops in case he doesn\'t start right away. And if he does, depth in case of injury. No big deal either way.

I\'m very familiar with Jimmy Williams\'s career. He\'s home grown talent, originally from Baton Rouge. Went to Episcopal High as QB, then to Vanderbilt as a CB.

Yep, B-player depth. A wise signing. There may be quite a few teams that didn\'t get the guy they wanted and may be willing to trade for Fred Thomas, Boo Williams, Mike McKenzie, Darren Howard, and even an Aaron Brooks.
It all depends on who we get, and who someone else didn\'t get.

Agreed Danno. No difference maker, bit a solid fill in should we trade Fred. Doesn\'t really help or hurt us, but allows us time to develop our CB should we draft one.

So right now this is the Cb depth chart

1.Predator
2.F Brown
3.J Craft(even though he didn\'t impress me)
4.F Thomas/J Williams(toss up?)

Any thoughts?
