I read an article citing no Team has ever won a SB with a QB making more than 12.5% of the teams payroll. So we’re looking at at a 2-3 year deal worth $21M per year?

No team ever won a Super Bowl after losing their final three games of the season, also. The Saints overcame that meaningless stat.

It has only been in the past decade or so that QB's became so much more important so it makes sense the percentage of their cap hit would rise. There will be a QB very soon making over 12.5% of team cap winning it all. Then you be reading that no QB making over 14.3% of team cap has ever won the SB. Then that will happen.

Certain statistics such as that are totally meaningless. Just as meaningless as QB's in their mid to late 30's are at the end of their useful careers. That was the mantra until just recently.

So exactly what has Brees done over the last 2 years to deserve a 15% pay cut? Get older?

Why should Brees take a pay cut when the salary cap has increased by 16% over the last two years?

Why should Brees take a pay cut when a team, say the Denver Broncos for example, would likely pay him $30 million/year cash guaranteed?

The Saints are not going to get to set the terms of the next contract any more than they set the terms of the last one. Brees' next contract is going to be exactly what he wants it to be. And it's not going to have a pay cut. Brees' last contract was $24.5 million/year, $30 million signing bonus, no trade, no tag, auto void 1 year extension. Any discussion that starts below this is a non-starter.

Just because Brees doesn't go out of his way to break the Saints' bank doesn't mean that he shouldn't be fairly compensated. Brees and the team have worked together on this stuff for 12 years now. His original 6 year, $60 million contract was severely undervalued. The 4 year $100 million in 2012 was market. The extension in 2016 was a trade of some dollars and cap flexibility for a no trade, and a no franchise. And Brees has earned every penny over the last two years of the extension.

He's not going to take a pay cut. He doesn't deserve a pay cut. In a lot of ways he's a better QB than he was in 2012 and 2013.

So the starting number is above $25 million. Anything less really isn't in the discussion.

Drew knows his value. He wants the team to win and needs a supporting cast which also costs money.

This is why I don't read.
