Sean Payton expects a Drew Brees deal soon
 

Saints coach Sean Payton does not. Payton told PFT Live on Thursday that he expects a deal to be done soon, a deal that will keep Brees in New Orleans.

Payton expressed confidence that agent Tom Condon and G.M. Mickey Loomis will get the situation worked out, which will put Brees under contract for a 13th season in New Orleans.

I wish we would sign him long term and not back load the contract so we don't have to go through this again. I don't want to be stuck with dead cap money after he retires.

Mickey already owes him a ton of money. I hope we don't kick even more money down the road so that we don't strap the team for cash this year. We will be stuck with dead money and that has always been Mickey Loomis' plan. Build a winner around Drew........before Jeff Ireland came on board it was a bad idea. I can live with this strategy now.

Kicking money down the road makes sense when the cap keeps increasing at the current pace. Every dollar you push forward one year is only costing you ninety cents worth of cap space and only eighty cents when pushed two years down the road. That is using the cap to its fullest advantage.
