NFL sets 2018 salary cap at $177.2 million

1 Attachment(s)
The NFL has settled on the salary cap figure for 2018.

The cap for next season will be $177.2 million, according to multiple reports, including the first by NFL Network. The reports said that teams received a notice of the official cap number from the league on Monday.

The reported number for this year is an increase of more than $9 million after the cap was $168 million in 2017.

The league's salary cap has been on a steady rise in recent years, and the heightened numbers certainly help the New Orleans Saints because of how tight they've been against the cap.

Combining today's news and statistics from overthecap.com, the Saints should have about $30.7 million in cap space, but that doesn't include the deal with safety Kurt Coleman. That cap space will also change drastically depending on what happens with the Drew Brees negotiations.

Now Drew’s contract can be determined.

Now we have about 30 Million in cap space. We can get Drew signed and maybe one of those really good FA's for the defense.

Brees contract is done already imho.
Just a few numbers to shuffle about but the baseline will be there.
Just wondering if he is willing to take any discount for a last shot or two or if he is looking for the top average salary at QB again. Im hoping Championship shots come first and maybe he will agree to a 20-22ml a year range fully guaranteed

Maybe... just wondering if he retires, how the cap numbers work. So if they give him a massive top $ numbers, do retirement papers marginalize the cap hit?

I agree that a deal has been most likely been agreed upon pending some fine tuning based upon final cap figures and free agent moves.

The signing bonus, yes, as the player must pay the unused portion back.

That payback would be cap relief- 'the Barry Sanders Rule'

Yes ... and No. The Barry Sanders Rules only applies if there is specific language in the contract stating that the player agrees to return (or not collect) any unearned portion of a signing bonus. If the contract does not contain this specific language the entire non-allocated portion of the amortized signing bonus "accelerates" and hits that year's cap in its entirety.

Brees may not have this provision in his contract given his leverage.
