Round 7--Jimmy Verdon

Jimmy Verdon Grade: 3.3
Position: DE
Class: Sr
School: Arizona St.
Conference: Pac-10
Ht., Wt.: 6-3, 280
40 Time: 5.06
Selected by: New Orleans Saints
Round 7, pick 18 (232 overall) Grading System

BIO: Three-year starter who.s won varying degrees of All-Conference honors since his sophomore campaign. Senior totals included 40/8.5/2 when he played defensive tackle, after 44/6/3 as a junior.

POSITIVES: Quick, explosive defensive lineman who could develop into a left end in the NFL. Gets off the snap with a great first step, bends his knees and plays with leverage. Displays good hand technique protecting himself, wedges inside of blocks and quickly gets to the action. Moves well laterally, displaying speed in pursuit. Used at defensive end during the Senior Bowl and displayed great speed off the edge.

NEGATIVES: Undersized and driven off the line by opponents. Marginal run defender.

ANALYSIS: An alert lineman and instinctive football player, Verdon offers decent upside for the next level. His combination of athleticism, explosion, and smarts could help him see action as a rookie in the NFL.

PROJECTION: Undrafted Free Agent

who, what, why?

why not shazor-a safety/linebacker who was basically the same player as davis?

can this guy play linebacker if he is an undersized DE?

I\'m going crazy

Round 7--Jimmy Verdon

From NFL.com:

Positives: Thick-body type who plays at a low pad level, firing off the snap with explosion and force … Played the strong side end position most of the time, but looked more comfortable playing inside at tackle, as he redirects quickly and is fluid when changing direction to slide down the line … Aware of the play developing, easily diagnosing the action while searching out the ball, showing good initial quickness and penetrating skills from the interior position … Uses his hands with impressive force to defeat combo blocks and extends his arms properly to keep blockers off his feet … Has a sharp initial burst to penetrate and flush the quarterback out of the pocket … Has the speed needed to track the ball carrier down along the perimeter, playing with good leverage as he uses his upper body strength to stack and control … High-effort type whose motor is constantly going … Reads the pass scheme well and will get his hands up to block the quarterback\'s vision … Also uses those hands effectively to stave off blocks and keep blockers away from his legs … Has good change-of-direction agility and enough short-area quickness coming off the edge to penetrate the backfield.

Negatives: Needs to add more bulk and muscle tone (short legs and soft stomach) … Has marginal foot speed when asked to cover in the short-area passing game … Struggles at times to shed, as he does not consistently deliver the strong hand punch, but is adequate with those hands when keeping blockers from attacking his legs … Used mostly in a read scheme, rather than unleashing him to attack the ball … Labors in pursuit when having to chase long distances … Lacks explosion coming off the edge and has poor timed speed to play end and does not have the frame to carry more bulk for a classic tackle position … Is limited as a pass rusher, as he does not have the swim and rip moves to penetrate, nor the quickness to close on the quarterback with consistency.
Sounds alright to me. Also, it seems to me that LB will be our target if we trade Howard. We have a lot of wide-body DTs in the fold now: Jefferson, Verdon, Leilse, Green... and so on.

This is just depth for when we trade Howard. Smith, Grant, Young, Sullivan, Whitehead, Bryant, Leisle, Green, and now Jefferson and this guy. I think we will be able to rotate linemen just fine.

Strengths: Has good size...Solid athlete with good quickness...Versatile and has experience at both defensive end as well as defensive tackle...Does a very good job versus the run...Is strong and powerful...Works hard and has a good motor.
Weaknesses: Very slow and has a pretty serious lack of speed...May be a bit of a DE / DT \'tweener...Is not the type of dynamic pass rusher the pros love...Plays too tall at times and needs to show better leverage...May need to be in the right system to succeed.
Notes: Could project to either DE or DT in the pros depending on the scheme of the team that picks him up...May fit best as a DE in a 3-4 scheme such as Pittsburgh\'s or Houston\'s.
let\'s hope he can play DT...

Those other guys you\'re all mentioning may be undrafted. If so, we can get them still.

What surprised me was that yesterday Haslett made a big deal about passing on Cody because: \"He\'s a defensive end, we aren\'t taking a defensive end.\"

I wonder if they are going to convert him to a DT? Or if he\'s just a camp body?

Oooops, thinking one thing, typing another
