Saints' first-round drafted Marcus Davenport agree on contract

The New Orleans Saints and first-round drafted defensive end Marcus Davenport have agreed to terms on a four-year contract, NFL Network reported Thursday (May 10).

The report came one day before the Saints are set to begin their three-day rookie minicamp, which will run from Friday to Sunday.

Financial terms were not reported, although all rookie contracts for drafted players have a standard length of four years. Contracts for first-round drafted players can be extended to a fifth year after a player has completed three seasons.

The Saints selected Davenport with the No. 14 overall pick after trading up 13 spots from No. 27. The Saints and Green Bay Packers swapped first-round picks in deal that also gave the Packers a fifth-round pick from 2018 and a first-round pick from 2019.

I was thinking the same- he was signed pretty fast. I cant wait to see this guy in action!

I like that he signed but if I was his parent, I would try to encourage him to fire his agent. He was holding the cards since the saints traded their 1st rd pick next year. No way would I have my son agree to the 5th year option. All that said, welcome aboard, Geaux saints

If they're willing to invoke the 5th year option, chances are you could've signed a massive deal your 3rd or 4th year

I thought all first round draft picks have a 5th year option in the contract.

He has no choice in that matter, neither does his agent. All first round picks are subject to this rule. It's up to the team as to whether or not they exercise the fifth year option.

There are only two things negotiable in a first round contract ... how the signing bonus is paid out and any offset language (which deals with what happens IF the team chooses to decline the fifth year option). The second is what held up the Joey Bosa contract. Everything else is slotted based upon draft position.

The front office and Davenport want this to work and are working hard to make the transition smooth to the Saints locker room. Everyone is onboard to make this pick ready to hit the field for training camp. I'm excited to see what he can do. Although, before we find out he's going to have to get by Alex Okafor and earn some snaps.
