Saints First Round Picks

You know what, we've done extremely well in the first round of the draft in the last decade.

Check out these picks
2004 - Will Smith - Stud.
2003 - Johnthan Sullivan - Bust.
2002 - Donte Stallworth - Starter
- Charles Grant - Stud.
2001 - Duece McAllister - Stud.
1999 - Rickey Williams - Starter.
1998 - Kyle Turely - Starter.
1997 - Chris Naeole - Starter.
1996 - Alex Molden - Hmmm.
1995 - Mark Fields - Starter.
1994 - Joe Johnson - Starter, sometimes stud.
1993 - William Roaf - Stud.
- Irv Smith - Bust.

Damn. We must be doing better than the league average for starters to busts?

Totally agree with that. We are probably on par with first rounds for most other teams. And considering we generally pick around 15-19, less bust probability IMO than picking 1-10. IF we were that high, maybe we would have selected Ryan Leaf or Rick Mirer or Kijana Carter or whomever was rated that high. Luckily they are usually gone by the time we pick. But the later rounds is where you make your money.

I totally disagree with that statement. Even though there have been \"busts\" picked in the top 10 picks of the draft, you\'re much more likely to hit than miss. You\'ve basically got your choice.

Aren\'t you one of the guys who hoped we lost our last 4 games so we could select in the top 10?

Um, yes, to get Mike Williams or DJ. This would be one year out of how many? Look at the Colts. They had Peyton and Harrison, still went 3-13, then got Edge James. The rest is history. I was hoping for that for us ONE YEAR which was LAST YEAR yes, so what\'s your point?

San Diego, Cincy and Arizona, who seemed to annualy pick busts and also annually picked in the top 10. They eventually hit upon some players, and have gotten better. But it took YEARS of picking very very high in the draft for them to find those players. IMO, you are more likely to find that one difference maker top 10(Peyton, Vick, Tomlinson) than in the 15-19 range. But you are also more likely to get a bust(Mirer, Akili Smith, Kijana Carter) in the top 10 range as well.

bust definition is important too. a top 10 \"bust\" might be an okay pick if he was chosen in the 3rd or 4th rd instead. the higher the pick, the higher the expectations.

i don\'t mcpherson is a world beater but i do think he was an excellent 5th rd choice. i would have completely different feelings about him if he would have been chosen in the 2nd rd.

i agree, n.o. 1sts have been better than average. across the board though, not terrible, but not on par with the first rounders. a lot of the weakness is from not getting more out of 3rd rd or higher LBs\' hodge, allen, and grant. watson was okay but has a lot of room to grow. bockwoldt is the type of late round surprises you need every coupla yrs to be competitive in the nfl anymore.
